Llegó a Chile en años donde se retiraba Hugo Orlando Gatti en Argentina y se repetía el nombre de José René Higuita en Colombia. Fue Universidad de Chile, en 1987, el primer club de Nicolás Servando Villamil en nuestro país. Un portero aún sobrio que compartió el arco con Jaime Tejeda en una U que tenía al Tata Fernando Riera como técnico, reemplazado luego por Alberto Quintano. Los azules fueron quintos con el argentino jugando 19 partidos, pero no seguiría para la siguiente temporada. En 1988 lo esperaba Deportes Concepción, su casa, pese a un affaire con Fernández Vial en 1996 cuando José Daniel Morón ocupó el arco lila.
Villamil reemplazó a Daniel Montilla en 1988 y apareció lo de Loco, el que salía jugando como Higuita o hacía la de Dios como Gatti. Su mejor año fue el de 1990, cuando desde el arco llevó a Concepción por primera vez a la Copa Libertadores de América con un equipo de desconocidos jugadores que luego se hicieron famosos, pasando a equipos grandes de la capital y a la selección chilena.
En 1990 Nicolás Villamil jugó 27 partidos y comandó la defensa de Miguel Ardiman, Osvaldo Villegas, Carlos Fuentes y Marcelo Miranda. Con Óscar Lepe de capitán y Juan Carlos Almada haciendo goles como loco, el apodo de su compatriota que comenzaba a ganar portadas de la Minuto 90 y la Triunfo. Uno de sus mejores partidos ese año sería una derrota, el 17 de noviembre ante Unión Española en Santa Laura. Pese al 2-0 de los rojos, atajó todo lo atajable, incluso un penal a Richard Zambrano poniéndose de espaldas hasta segundos antes de la ejecución. Se convertiría en su marca registrada.
Los penquistas lograrían el paso a la Libertadores tras su triunfo en la Liguilla. Para 1991 llegaría el defensa uruguayo Nelson Correa, los volantes Óscar Lee Chong y Héctor Adomaitis, y el delantero José Pérez. Habría cambios en todas las líneas, pero el arco quedaba inmutable. Villamil, a esta altura figura del fútbol chileno, iba a ser uno de los líderes. Para el debut ante Colo Colo, el 20 de febrero, el Loco volvería a ser figura. También volvería a atajar un penal, esta vez a Jaime Pizarro, haciendo un atisbo de ponerse de espaldas antes de la ejecución, pero no tan marcado como meses antes ante Zambrano. Esa contención hizo que el especialista Pizarro no volviera a lanzar penales en esa Copa, pasando esa responsabilidad a Sergio Salgado y Rubén Espinoza, uno que aún seguía con los fantasmas de la Libertadores anterior.
Concepción pasaría a segunda ronda de la Copa. En Ecuador, ante Barcelona, volvería a atajar un penal, esta vez al campeón del mundo Marcelo Trobbiani ayudando al avance de fase. En octavos de final les tocaría enfrentar a América de Cali y a una intensa neblina en Collao. Ese fue un partido muy bajo de Villamil, pero tenía margen, y también excusa. Ese encuentro no se debió jugar. Para la TV prácticamente no se vio nada.
En 1992 fue parte de un proyecto de Everton, que incluía al boliviano Milton Melgar, ex River y Boca, además de Luis Santibáñez en la banca. Villamil terminó marchándose a la Liga de Portoviejo de Ecuador, para volver en 1993 a su Concepción, equipo donde está en el sitial de los ídolos.
Nunca más revivió los años 90-91, pero fue parte del ascenso de 1994, siendo suplente de lujo de Antonio Zaracho. En 1997 se reencontró con Almada en Concepción, pero el resultado fue otro. Los años no pasaban en vano. Se retiró en 1999 en Ñublense de Chillán, cuando aún pertenecía a la Octava Región, su lugar en el mundo.
Varios años después de dejar el fútbol hizo noticia como empresario futbolístico, escándalo incluido en la venida de Diego Maradona a jugar por Universidad Católica ante una selección chilena del Sifup. Luego Emilio Sutherland “desenmascararía” algo de su mitomanía, y lo que ello conllevaba, en En Su Propia Trampa. Sería la diabetes y una amputación de una de sus piernas la que lo traería otra vez a la noticia. Hoy fue su muerte, a los 56 años, por culpa de la misma enfermedad que se llevó su pie. Él quiso ponerse de espaldas y atajar el destino. Esta vez no lo logró. Se fue el Loco Villamil.
