Interamericana 1994: El ninguneado título internacional de Universidad Católica

«Católica campeón de la Copa Intercontinental, Católica campeón de la Copa Intercontinental”, gritaba eufórico la voz del estadio en San Carlos de Apoquindo una fría noche del 1 de noviembre de 1994, casi madrugada del día 2. En realidad no era la Copa Intercontinental, que un mes más tarde el Vélez Sarsfield de José Luis Sánchez le ganaría al Milan de Italia. Se trataba de la Copa Interamericana, un trofeo disputado entre el ganador de la Copa Libertadores del año anterior frente al campeón de la Copa de Campeones de la Concacaf. El último título lo había ganado Colo Colo en 1992 ante el Puebla de México, en un Monumental repleto. Es uno de los tres títulos internacionales que tienen los albos junto a la Libertadores 91 y la Recopa Sudamericana 92. En el año 1993 la Copa Interamericana entre el América de México y el Sao Paulo de Brasil no se había podido jugar por tope de calendarios. En 1994 se tenía que disputar sí o sí

¿Cómo había llegado Universidad Católica hasta ahí si nunca ganó la Libertadores? Acá un mito que hay que derribar. El Sao Paulo, campeón de la Copa Libertadores de 1993 venciendo a la UC, jamás renunció a jugarla, sino que luchó hasta último momento para hacer frente a esos partidos de ida y vuelta ante el Saprissa de Costa Rica y disputar además la Copa Conmebol, otro torneo internacional al que estaba clasificado por merito propio y que el ahora técnico Murcy Ramalho, mano derecha de Telé Santana, estaba muy interesado en jugar.

La Copa Interamericana 1994 se programó para el 15 de septiembre en Centroamérica y para el 1 de noviembre en Sudamérica. El partido de vuelta chocaría con la primera fase de la Copa Conmebol, torneo que el Sao Paulo comenzaría jugando ante el Gremio. Si bien el nuevo equipo de José Luis Sierra intentó cambiar uno de los dos partidos a jugarse el 1 de noviembre, la Conmebol fue intransigente. La última oferta de los brasileños fue jugar los dos partidos el mismo día con dos equipos distintos, sin embargo la propuesta no prosperó para no “chacrear” los torneos. Con ese último “no” los paulistas decidieron jugar solo la Conmebol, un torneo que le permitiría disputar cuatro partidos de local con sus respectivas recaudaciones. La apuesta les resultó y fueron campeones de la Conmebol 94 con Caté y Emerson Pereira como dos de sus grandes figuras. Vencieron en la final a Peñarol, el equipo que sacó a la Universidad de Chile en semifinales.

Con la negativa de la Conmebol, la UC tomó el lugar de Sao Paulo en la Interamericana. Los cruzados habían sido vicecampeones de América en 1993 con un equipo muy diferente al que afrontaba el año 1994. Néstor Gorosito y Alberto Acosta tomarían los lugares de Gerardo Reinoso y Juan Carlos Almada. El Gallego Vásquez el de Ricardo Lunari, Miguel Ardiman el de Leonel Contreras y Patricio Toledo el de Óscar Wirth. En la banca, Manuel Pellegrini había llegado desde O’Higgins para reemplazar a Ignacio Prieto.

El equipo del Ingeniero jugó la ida el 15 de septiembre en San José de Costa Rica. Los cruzados caerían por 3-1 y los ticos recuerdan hasta hoy los dichos de Alberto Acosta, quien se quejó de los golpes, del mezquino planteamiento y del poco profesionalismo de algunos jugadores del Saprissa. La vuelta en San Carlos estaría calientita, aunque faltaba un mes y medio para el partido de revancha. Los cruzados recuperarían a Nelson Parraguez, reemplazado por Rodrigo Gómez en Costa Rica, además de Miguel Ardiman, titularísimo en esa campaña, pero que en San José cedería su lugar a Daniel López para hacer dupla con Sergio Vázquez, autor del gol cruzado.

El 1 de noviembre de 1994 vendría la revancha. Si se busca data de ese partido en páginas costarricenses, se recuerda como una de las grandes tristezas del fútbol de ese país. Para ellos era un torneo importante, en el que se le habían abierto chances tras la salida de Sao Paulo y el ingreso de la UC. El Saprissa de ese año era prácticamente la selección de Costa Rica que en 1997 jugaría la Copa América de Bolivia. Muchos ticos recuerdan también ese partido de vuelta en San Carlos como “un robo”. Hablan de excesivos minutos de descuento para que la UC lograra mandar el partido a alargue, siendo que el gol de Juvenal Olmos fue solo en el 90+2, y no en el octavo minuto de descuento como malamente recuerdan en la web  los seguidores del equipo derrotado.

Los cruzados de Pellegrini salieron con todo en San Carlos de Apoquindo. Toledo; Romero, Ardiman, Vázquez, Tupper; Lepe, Parraguez; Vásquez, Gorosito; Acosta y Barrera fueron los 11 elegidos. A los 30 minutos los cruzados ya ganaban 2-0 con goles del Moto Romero y un golazo de Alberto Acosta, además de un gol anulado a Gorosito por convertir directamente un tiro libre que era indirecto. Con ese 2-0 eran campeones por el gol de visita del Charly. Tras el tanto del Beto a la media hora, vendría una serie de hechos que cambiaría todos los planes. A los 35 minutos descontaría Javier Wanchope, hermano de Paulo César, y a los 14 del segundo tiempo sería expulsado el central Ronald González. Mientras algunos en Costa Rica consideran esa tarjeta roja como “parte del robo”, otros culpan al zaguero de la derrota y de la pérdida del título, en lo que iba a ser un hito histórico para el Saprissa, equipo que nunca pudo ser campeón, pese a jugarla dos veces. Tampoco lo lograron Alajuelense y Cartaginés.

Cuando la presión cruzada asfixiaba, a los 83 minutos el Beto Acosta se hizo expulsar tontamente por un entrevero con Rolando Fonseca. Ambos se ganarían la tarjeta roja. Los últimos minutos serían 10 contra 9. En los cruzados había entrado Olmos por Jorge Vásquez y Rozental para jugar de lateral izquierdo en lugar de Raimundo Tupper. Eso sí, no había un nueve de área. Para eso, Pellegrini mandó a Sergio Vázquez a jugar de centrodelantero, ya sea para privotear o tratar de anotar, como lo había hecho meses antes ante la U con nueve jugadores en cancha. En el 90+2 un centro al área fue pivoteado por el central argentino, quien además bloqueó al defensa que lo perseguía. El balón le quedó a Juvenal Olmos y, en una de las peores definiciones que se recuerden en San Carlos, vencería al meta Erick Lonnis. “Le pegué tan mal que desubicó al arquero”, recordaría años después.

El gol de Pinturita mandaría el partido al alargue ya cerca de la medianoche. Sergio Vázquez volvería a la defensa, pero sería su  compañero Miguel Ardiman quien tomaría las banderas. Recordando sus tiempos de lateral derecho en Concepción se mandaría a la ofensiva y anotaría el 4-1 que le daba el título a los cruzados. Ya con los ticos resignados, el Chamuca Barrera sellaría el triunfo con un 5-1 y el primer título internacional para Universidad Católica, título que no pudo tener vuelta olímpica por la invasión de cancha de los hinchas cruzados. Entrega de la Copa y a los camarines.

Ese fue el penúltimo internacional del fútbol chileno antes de la Copa Sudamericana de la U de Sampaoli en 2011. Antes, Colo Colo había aportado con tres. Tras esos cinco, se ha perdido la Copa Sudamericana del 2006, la Recopa Sudamericana de 2012 y la Suruga Bank de ese mismo año. Antes, las Libertadores de Unión Española, las dos de Cobreloa, la de Católica y la de Colo Colo 73. También la Intercontinental 91. Son tan poquitos títulos internacionales para el fútbol chileno, que esa Copa Interamericana de 1994 también vale. Ese torneo nunca lo ganó un brasileño. En 1998 el Vasco de Gama la perdió ante el DC United de EEUU, mientras que en 1997 el Gremio le entregó su cupo al Nacional de Colombia, vicecampeón de la Libertadores de 1995. Otros ganadores fueron Vélez Sarsfield, Olimpia, River Plate, Independiente, América de México, Nacional de Uruguay y Colo Colo, equipo chileno que en 1992 la celebró a estadio lleno. Un titulo que no ha ganado ningún sudamericano que no haya llegado a una final de Libertadores.
