El 26 de mayo de 2013 Universidad Católica dependía, en cierta medida, del talento de Emiliano Vecchio y Colo Colo para ser campeones en Arica. ¿Por qué? Si los albos le ganaban a Unión y los cruzados a San Marcos, el campeón del Torneo Transición 2013 era el conjunto de Martín Lasarte.

El Colo Colo de ese año era un equipo diezmado, pero era Colo Colo. Todos los cruzados esperaban que por fin el equipo de Hugo González se prendiera para que no le festejaran en su cara, pero eso jamás pasó.

El conductor de los albos aquella tarde fue Emiliano Vecchio, quien hace pocos meses jugaba para los rojos de Santa Laura. Al comienzo del partido saludó a todo el plantel y cariñosamente al DT José Luis Sierra. Además, antes del encuentro, había dicho abiertamente que quería que los campeones fueran sus excompañeros. Hasta ahí, ninguna prueba contundente para desconfiar de la honestidad del «Gordo» Vecchio.

Las pruebas concretas ocurrieron durante los 90 minutos y fueron televisadas para todo Chile. No hubo soborno ni hombre del maletín. Ni siquiera un pedido formal de sus excompañeros de Unión. Sólo fue que Vecchio no quiso jugar y punto. No creó peligro en el arco de Unión y cada vez que debió patear un córner lo lanzó bien pasado, cosa que ningún compañero pudiera crearle peligro al Mono Sánchez.

Para peor, al término del partido cambió camiseta con Patricio Rubio y salió ovacionado por la barra de Unión portando la casaquilla hispana. Tras el partido, se unió a los festejos, en un camarín donde seguía siendo el «regalón», según consignaba El Mercurio al día siguiente.

Esa tarde Colo Colo no tenía nada que perder, y mucho menos que ganar. Una derrota iba a ser otra más de las tantas que tuvo ese período. El escenario exacto para que Vecchio perjudicara a la UC y no pusiera en peligro el título de Unión. Este viernes 18 de septiembre de 2021, a más de ocho años del partido, el hoy jugador de Rosario Central transparentó la situación en ESPN Argentina.

“Jugaba en Unión Española, club donde perdí una final a penales (ante Huachipato) y luego me venden a Colo Colo. Al otro semestre en la última fecha jugamos ante la Unión y si nos ganaba eran campeones, pero si nosotros ganábamos el campeón era un clásico rival nuestro (UC)», explicó. Por el cariño que yo le tenía a Unión Española y la opción de que saliera campeón un clásico rival nuestro, yo no iba a hacer ningún gol», declaró ante las risas de los periodistas argentinos.

¿Cómo terminó? «Ganó Unión Española al final. Los córner terminaron un poco pasados ese día”, añadió el argentino en diálogo con la cadena internacional. Todo risas, todo anecdótico. De reproches, nada.
