Candonga Carreño: El día que plantó a Wanderers para irse a Everton

Juan Enrique Carreño jugó en 16 clubes profesionales diferentes. También en la Roja adulta y en el Mundial Juvenil de 1987. Iban a ser 17 equipos, pero el día que pudo firmar por Santiago Wanderers se arrepintió casi en la misma sede de Valparaíso para cruzar a Viña del Mar y firmar por Everton. Iba a ser su segunda etapa en los ruleteros, impidiendo con eso sumar un nuevo club en su currículum.

La historia del Candonga con el profesionalismo había comenzando en la segunda mitad de los 80 en Colo Colo, desde donde se fue  peleado con Arturo Salah, quien nunca lo tuvo en los planes albos, ni tampoco en la Selección, donde prefirió a otros como Gino Cofré, Juan Ramón Garrido, Richard Zambrano, Juan Castillo o Marco Antonio Figueroa, mientras Carreño jugaba Copa Libertadores con Coquimbo Unido en 1992 o era una de las grandes figuras de la Copa Chile 93, defendiendo a Everton, antes de la Copa América de Ecuador. Apenas se fue Salah, el Candonga fue el 9 de la Roja de Nelson Acosta ante España en Alicante.

En Everton había recalado por primera vez a comienzos de 1993 de la mano de Jorge Garcés, el mismo que luego lo pediría para Cobreloa 1995 e Iquique 1999. El mismo que lo echaría de los Dragones a mediados de ese 1999, obligándolo a partir a algún equipo de la Primera B. Wanderers de Valparaíso sería el primero que pondría sus ojos en él. La traba es que su pase pertenecía desde 1994 a los Pumas de México, quienes lo habían mandado a préstamo a Cobreloa 95, Concepción 96 y 97, Huachipato 98 e Iquique 99. 

Los acercamientos se hicieron, y el jugador, que se había peleado con Zamorano y Acosta antes de Francia 98, y con todo Provincial Osorno después del Mundial, llegaría hasta la Quinta Región para sumar un nuevo club. Guillermo Páez lo esperaría en la cabina técnica de Wanderers de Valparaíso. Fue prácticamente en la sede del club porteño donde todo cambió. Llegaría una nueva oferta. Lo llamativo es que era del archirrival: Everton de Viña del Mar.

El equipo Oro y Cielo iba a romper el chanchito de la B y ofrecería tres millones de pesos mensuales, más quince millones de pesos a fin de año en caso que el equipo de Jorge Luis Siviero ascendiera a Primera División. Candonga lo pensó, se imaginó viviendo otra vez en Viña, en la Ciudad del Jardín, y decidió cambiarse de comuna, sin importarle la odiosidad porteña. La apuesta evertoniana haría que el tesorero del club, Óscar Padró, renunciara al no estar de acuerdo con el «millonario» fichaje del delantero que llevaba 4 goles en 11 partidos en Iquique. El equipo viñamarino, pese a estar peleando el ascenso, ya había presentado dificultades para pagar los sueldos durante ese 1999. 

Con todo OK, Carreño elegiría Everton, pero se presentaría un nuevo problema. Pumas de México, club dueño de su pase desde julio de 1994, alegaría 50 mil dólares no pagados por el préstamo correspondiente al año 1999. Finalmente sería Iquique, equipo con más problemas ecónomicos que Everton, quien estaría obligado a pagar lo solicitado, lo que a esa altura era una deuda. Los problemas económicos de Iquique harían que Jorge Garcés, ahora enemigo de Carreño, partiera a Wanderers, justamente el equipo al que había desechado Carreño. Peineta subiría a Primera con los caturros, el 2000 haría una gran campaña y el 2001 sería campeón del Campeonato Nacional. Con Carreño en el plantel, probablemente nunca hubiera arribado.

Ese segundo semestre de 1999 Carreño iba a intentar cumplir su segunda etapa en Everton. La primera había sido corta, pero exitosa. Fue el goleador del equipo que alcanzaría las semifinales de la Copa Chile ante Unión Española, a la postre campeón con Marcelo Vega y Juan Castillo como figuras. La buena campaña ruletera haría que la estancia de Rubén Espinoza en Viña fuera corta, y partiera otra vez a O’Higgins para jugar el Torneo Nacional. Misma suerte seguiría Juan Carreño, quien sería el elegido por Nelson Acosta para reemplazar en Unión Española a Vega y Castillo, quienes partirían como fichajes estrella a Colo Colo.

La segunda etapa de Carreño en Everton sería para el olvido. Un doping positivo por cocaína le impediría terminar el año, pese a que el equipo finalmente ascendería a Primera División. En el año 2000 volvería para jugar en Santiago Morning junto con Pablo Lenci, otro que cargaba con una suspensión por dopaje. Tras muchos meses alejado de la actividad, en 2003 intentaría volver en Deportes Concepción, en otro equipo que ya había defendido, y quizá con el que más se había identificado junto a Unión Española. En los lilas se retiraría un grande. Con sus altos y bajos, pero un goleador valiente de esos que penan por estos días.  A uno que le dio lo mismo echarse encima a Los Panzers.
