Gustavo Quinteros: Empezar bien y terminar mal

Podría ser un dato anecdótico, de esos que los busquillas futboleros sacan en alguna discusión sobre sus equipos, jugadores o entrenadores preferidos. Lo cierto es que lo de Gustavo Quinteros ya es una tendencia, e incluso le valió salir de la dirección técnica de la Selección de Ecuador. El hombre empieza muy bien y termina muy mal en muchos de los torneos que compite. Lamentablemente Colo Colo es quien más está sufriendo esta racha negativa del DT.

Fue campeón con Universidad Católica en 2019 en un torneo largo que no terminó por el Estallido Social, pero donde llevaba 15 puntos de ventaja y no se jugó el tramo final. Claro campeón y nada que reprocharle. Se fue de la UC, entre otras cosas, por la inseguridad que vivía Chile. Partió a Tijuana de México. Con los albos tiene dos títulos: la Copa Chile 2021 ante Everton y la Supercopa 2022 en un muere muere ante la UC. Si bien suman, no son los títulos con los que los albos se habían ilusionado de la mano del DT, sobre todo después de ver cómo se había comenzado.

La primera decepción fue en el Torneo Nacional 2021. En las inmediaciones del Torneo siempre estuvo a una distancia considerable de la pésima UC de Poyet. Ya con Paulucci como DT cruzado, llegó a estar cinco punto arriba tras el gol de Javier Parraguez a falta de seis partidos. Tras eso llegó el Covid, pero también el bajón de rendimiento en las fechas finales. Ya sin jugadores marginados en brote por el virus, perdió varios puntos importantes y terminó seis unidades abajo de los cruzados. Les habían descontado 11 de 18, mucho para un equipo grande con un DT de categoría. Era fácil culpar al Covid, pero ahí había algo más desde la cabina técnica. La propia Católica sumó varios puntos clave jugando con suplentes cuando tuvo brote, mientras que en varias fechas tuvo casos sueltos y pudo salir airosa. Para Colo Colo siempre fue un problema irremediable.

Ya en 2022, fue la Copa Libertadores y la Sudamericana donde el equipo de Quinteros empezó con todo, pero terminó recibiendo de a cuatro y quedando eliminado. En la Copa, comenzó ganándole a Fortaleza en Brasil y a Alianza Lima en el Monumental. La derrota ante River Plate en Macul era esperable, sobre todo por la desconcentración que provocó su descarado coqueteo con la Roja, pero lo sucedido en Perú cambió todo. Fue una farra ante el peor equipo del torneo y un cambio anímico parecido al del 2021 en la recta final del Torneo Nacional. Fue goleada en Argentina ante River jugando horrible, y derrota en Chile ante el Fortaleza brasileño, que lo hizo jugar contra ellos y contra sus propios fantasmas. Quedaba la Sudamericana como premio de consuelo.

En la otra mitad de la gloria, exactamente lo mismo. Triunfo claro en Chile ante Internacional Porto Alegre, con Pablo Solari imitando el “este barco no lo hunde ni Dios” del Titanic. “Jugando así no nos gana nadie”, dijo el argentino. Fue 4-1 en la vuelta, con un 1-0 a favor en el comienzo. Claramente el equipo no jugó “así”. Quinteros pasó de la línea de cuatro a la de tres, y luego a la de vuelta a la de cuatro. Antes del partido jamás le dio la confianza a Pizarro, y el joven volante jugó condicionado. Un fantasma de lo que venía haciendo en las pocas posibilidades que le estaba dando el DT que volvió a sufrir lo que sufrió en Ecuador, cuando era claro líder de las Eliminatorias rumbo a Rusia 2018 con 13 puntos de 15 posibles en 5 partidos disputados. Algo pasó ahí que Ecuador cayó en un pozo y terminó quedando fuera del Mundial con Quinteros despedido mucho antes de comenzar la recta final de las Clasificatorias.  Había empezado bien y terminado mal. 

En el Torneo Nacional 2022 tendrá la chance de matar la mufa. Con Colo Colo le lleva un punto a los segundos, y ocho al cuco Universidad Católica. Será su momento de callar bocas y de mandar a guardar este análisis en algún lado de quien lo escribe.
