Rubén Cousillas llegó poco antes de comenzar el segundo semestre de 1995 a Huachipato. Los rendimientos de Carlos Ortega y Gustavo Gatti no convencían, por lo que el nuevo DT Andrija Percic, reemplazante de Rolando García, dio rápidamente el sí cuando llegó el currículum del Flaco hasta Talcahuano. Para ese entonces tenía 38 años y era referente de dos equipos en Argentina: San Lorenzo y Argentinos Juniors. También había jugado en Almagro, Millonarios de Colombia, Mandiyú, Vélez Sarsfield y Morón. Era un jugador de renombre en el exigente fútbol argentino de los 80 y los 90. Se hizo arquero enfrentando a Maradona, Bianchi, Brindisi, Batistuta y Ramón Díaz. Huachipato lo iba a disfrutar por seis meses.

En Talcahuano dejó un gran recuerdo en el equipo de Omar Gómez, Wilson Contreras, Malcolm Moyano y Carampangue Zambrano. Llegó a jugar 18 partidos en el club y su aparición más mediática en televisión y revistas fue enfrentando a la UC en Collao en un duelo que dejó a Católica con vida tras un agónico gol de Juvenal Olmos, donde algo de responsabilidad tuvo Cousillas. En ese duelo enfrentó a Pellegrini, quien dirigía a los cruzados. Probablemente un dato más, de esos que se olvidan. En poco más de una rueda había enfrentado a 17 entrenadores y a centenas de jugadores. Eso, sumados a los miles con los que ya había jugado en sus 16 años de carrera profesional en Argentina y Colombia. Probablemente a Pellegrini ni lo saludó.

Cousillas había jugado en San Lorenzo entre 1980 y 1987. Ahí había coincidido con Néstor Gorosito y Alberto Acosta, con los que seguía teniendo algo de relación. En Argentinos Juniors, junto a Faryd Mondragón, fue uno de los arqueros de ese equipo que jugaba en Mendoza y que tuvo a Jaime Pizarro como una de sus grandes contrataciones. Hasta antes de llegar a Huachipato, esos eran de sus pocos nexos, y bien rebuscados, con Chile y los chilenos. Eso iba a cambiar bruscamente en el verano del 2001. El verano que le cambió la vida. “Gracias a Dios y Pellegrini”, repite el Flaco Cousillas hasta hoy. ¿La historia? Una serie de sucesos repentinos que lo llevó a dirigir a Cristiano Ronaldo en el Real Madrid. Lo suyo era estar en el club Sarmiento de  Roque Pérez, un modesto pueblo argentino, lugar en donde se retiró tras Huachipato, fue entrenador y presidente. Pronto los tiempos no le iban a dar.

El Flaco Cousillas, inmediatamente tras el retiro, fue ayudante de campo de Osvaldo Chiche Sosa en el Talleres de Córdoba de 1996 y Argentinos Juniors 1997. En 1998 se convertiría en empleado de su querido San Lorenzo, donde le darían la responsabilidad de ser el Ayudante de Óscar Ruggeri. Al segundo año, diferencias de criterios terminaron con Cousillas afuera y Ruggeri adentro. Eso fue casi a fines del 2000, ad portas del Verano del 2001, ese loco verano que para el Flaco es más famoso que el Verano del 98, exitosa teleserie argentina, y Verano del 92, hit de Los Piojos con Fasolita querido.

Ese verano del 2001 Ruggeri renunció a San Lorenzo en medio de la Copa Libertadores que lo enfrentó a Deportes Concepción, y donde Víctor Cancino no olvida el manotazo cobarde de Lucas Pusineri. Apenas ido el Cabezón, el presidente Fernando Miele llamó otra vez a Cousillas para que volviera al club. Pese a haber debutado en Almagro, era del riñón de San Lorenzo, club en el que fue campeón del Ascenso en 1982. Le ofrecieron un cargo en juveniles, a la par que le confirmaban que Juan José López y su cuerpo técnico se harían cargo del primer equipo. A los dos días le cambiaron los planes. Seguía contratado, pero ahora para ser ayudante de un semi desconocido DT chileno, el que aparentemente había sido recomendado por Acosta y Gorosito, sus excompañeros en los 80 y sus rivales en Chile en 1995 cuando eran dirigidos por el propio Pellegrini. Cousillas iba a ser el encargado de que el chileno cuajara bien en Argentina y San Lorenzo.

Hasta la presentación de Pellegrini, el Flaco Cousillas no había cruzado palabras con el Ingeniero. “Yo lo conocía por lo que contaban Gorosito y Acosta. El tema es que nos juntamos un rato antes de la presentación oficial. Ahí me dijo: ´Yo trabajo de esta manera, conmigo tendrás toda la confianza del mundo mano a mano, soy el único responsable y te voy a evaluar tres meses. Si me conformás, te quedás; si no, buscaré a otro’. Fue el martes 13 de febrero. Desde ahí no creo más en la mala suerte”, contaba a El Gráfico cuando ambos ya dirigían al Real Madrid.

Desde el verano del 2001 han pasado más de 21 años. 21 años en que Cousillas ha trabajado con Pellegrini en San Lorenzo, River Plate, Villarreal, Real Madrid, Malaga, Manchester City, West Ham, China y Betis. Ha tocado el cielo con equipos de menor popularidad, incluso sin lograr títulos. También lo ha hecho en gigantes de la actualidad, como Manchester City. Nada cambia al bueno de Cousillas, quien no pretende irse del lado del chileno, al que compara con Harvard: “Yo empecé como creo que se debe empezar, siendo segundo. Después, llegó lo de Manuel, y sin ser obsecuente, para mí es como estar en Harvard, un aprendizaje constante, sería un pecado mortal desaprovecharlo. Lo único que me motivaría alguna vez, en el largo plazo, sería dirigir a San Lorenzo, pero tampoco voy a sentir ninguna frustración si hago toda mi carrera como ayudante de Manuel”.

Para allá va la cosa. Cousillas hoy tiene 65 años y se ha ido mimetizando con el chileno. En España no conciben a uno sin el otro. Hoy son amigos, compañeros. “Es increíble la confianza que depositó en mí y hoy tenemos una relación que va más allá del jefe-ayudante; hay una amistad, vamos a comer juntos, nos pasamos a buscar para ir a entrenar”, relata el Flaco. Algún día tienen que volver a Sudamérica. Puede ser la selección de Chile, San Lorenzo de Almagro o el Sarmiento de San Roque, club al que siguió yendo siendo ayudante de Osvaldo Sosa y también de Pellegrini, aunque solo en su etapa en el Ciclón. En River Plate ya no. Lo necesitaba tiempo completo. El Ingeniero le debe esa. Tendrá que soltarlo si alguna vez le llega una oferta para dirigir en solitario a San Lorenzo. Sería su debut cerca de los 70 años, todo un récord. Desde Chile seguro tendrá uno que otro hincha más allá de Pellegrini. Aunque para muchos son la misma persona.
