Es una de las excentricidades más grande en la historia del fútbol chileno, pero también una de las menos conocida. El arquero mexicano Octavio Comenares es uno de los pocos arqueros extranjeros que ha sido campeón con la Universidad de Chile. Lo hizo jugando un partido en el Apertura 2009 con Sergio Markarián en la banca, pero lo hizo también siendo hijo de Octavio Colmenares, empresario mexicano que se unió a Carlos Heller para comprar la quebrada «U» el 25 de mayo de 2007 en 3.333 millones de pesos chilenos, unos 6, 4 millones dólares de la época.
Octavio Colmenares hijo (19-08-1989) llegó a Chile en 2004 para acompañar a su padre del mismo nombre, empresario mexicano que en nuestro país era en 2007 Gerente General de las Autopistas Aconcagua e Itata, empresas cuyo principal accionista era el Bancomex de México. Colmenares Padre quería adquirir sí o sí parte de la U. De Chile tras su quiebra. Primero se había acercado al multimillonario Jorge Vergara, dueño del Chivas de Guadalajara, pero el arrepentimiento de uno de los hombres fuertes del fútbol mexicano hizo que se aliara a Carlos Heller. Sin ningún competidor en el remate que se realizó en el Séptimo Juzgado Civil de Santiago, Heller (88%) y Colmenares (12%) se hicieron de la U.de Chile en quiebra. Tenían un año y medio para salir a la bolsa como Sociedad Anónima.
Con los empresarios ya empoderados, la U pasó del equipo del Síndico José Manuel Edwards, del DT Salvador Capitano, de Jorge Acuña, José Luis García y Mauricio Pinilla del Apertura 2007, al de Arturo Salah, Rafael Olarra, Pedro Morales y Marcelo Salas del Clausura. A las series juveniles se integró el arquero Octavio Colmenares Hijo, por ese entonces estudiante de cuarto medio del Nido de Águila. Claro, era hijo de un empresario que tenía a cargo carreteras concesionadas.
Tras un 2008 donde se sumaron jugadores como Walter Montillo, Raúl Estévez, Osvaldo González, Manuel Villalobos y el seleccionado José Contteras, en 2009 sería el turno de Sergio Markarián en la banca, más él ascenso de Octavio Colmenares al primer equipo como quinto extranjero tras la llegada de Nelson Pipino Cuevas, Juan Manuel Olivera y el recordado Hugo Notario, quienes se sumaban a Montillo. Ese semestre la U saldría campeón. Ese semestre sería el debut oficial y el único partido en Universidad de Chile de Octavio Colmenares, tercer arquero de ese equipo, pero que tuvo la posibilidad de jugar un partido oficial.
El feriado del 21 de mayo de 2009, cuando muchos estaban preocupados del discurso de la presidenta Michelle Bachelet, en el desierto de El Salvador jugaba un equipo B de Universidad de Chile ante Cobresal. En México gran parte de la familia de Octavio Colmenares frente a un computador, conectados como podían al viejo CDF. Iba a ser el debut profesional del joven Octavio Colmenares, de 19 años y apodado «El Mexi», elegido por Sergio Markarián por sobre Miguel Pinto y Hernán Caputto, los arqueros que estaban con la cabeza puesta en los octavos de final de Copa Libertadores ante Gremio y le dejaban el lugar al “hijo del jefe”.
Los azules salieron esa tarde de El Salvador con Colmenares; Cristóbal López, Juan González, Rodrigo Rivera y Rodrigo Jara; Miguel Coronado, Gonzalo Novoa y Ángel Rojas; José Luis Silva; Hugo Notario y Mauricio Hormona Gómez. En el segundo tiempo entrarían Felipe Seymour, Adrían Faúndez y Matías Celis, el defensor que se retiró con un partido oficial en la selección chilena adulta, en la época de Marcelo Bielsa.
La tarde fue negra para Octavio Colmenares, no solo por los tres goles que encajó de Nicolás Canales en el 3-2 de Cobresal sobre los azules, tampoco por la amarilla que recibió, sino que también porque ese Cobresal – Universidad de Chile inexplicablemente no se transmitió por CDF debido a problemas técnicos de última hora. En México no lo podían creer. Por primera vez Roja Directa andaba bien, pero la transmisión oficial, no. En el Clausura 2009 ocurriría lo mismo en un Iquique – U. de Chile en el Norte. Los dueños azules pondrían el grito en el cielo, cambiando con eso algunos protocolos del Canal del Fútbol.
Ese 21 de mayo de 2009 sería el único partido de Octavio Colmenares en la U, del que lamentablemente no hay registro en el CDF y que mucho menos llegó a México, donde esperaban expectantes sus familiares. ¿Lo positivo? El portero nacido en Ciudad de México sumó minutos oficiales en ese Apertura 2009, torneo que la U se consagraría campeón tras la final ante Unión Española en Santa Laura con gol de Juan Manuel Olivera.
Con ese logro, Colmenares se inscribió en la lista de Sergio Vargas, Hernán Caputto (ya nacionalizado en el Apertura 2009), Esteban Conde y Fernando de Paul (suplente sin minutos en el Clausura 2016-17) como arqueros extranjeros que lograron un título de Campeonato Nacional de Chile. Fue solo un partido. Fue por ser “hijo del dueño”. Fue perdiendo, ganándose una amarilla, y recibiendo tres goles en su debut. Da lo mismo, Octavio Colmenares Hijo puede decir que fue campeón de Primera División en Chile con Sergio Markarián, un torneo antes que el DT del segundo semestre, José Horacio Basualdo, lo obligara a nacionalizarse para estar en el plantel que jugaría Copa Sudamericana y que contaría con el uruguayo Mauricio Victorino. Él se negaría y pasaría al Pumas Morelos y Barnechea, antes de abandonar su carrera profesional en el Mastercard FC de México. Incomprobable. Lo de la U sí que es verdad, aunque “el” partido que jugó es uno de los pocos encuentros de Primera División de Chile en los últimos 20 años que no han pasado por TV.
