Copa Pícaro Fernández: ¿El peor refuerzo extranjero en la historia de la U?

“Yo debuté oficialmente en la Copa Pícaro Fernández”, comentaba hace poco Rodrigo Ríos, exjugador de Católica. Sin maldad, el zurdo recordaba el nombre que Eduardo Bonvallet inmortalizó para la Copa Ciudad de Santiago de 1996, torneo donde participó la UC, la U, Defensor de Uruguay y Ferrocarril Oeste de Argentina. En el debut de la Copa, Gorosito y Acosta se despedirían en la cancha de San Carlos de Apoquindo frente a Ferro antes de partir a Japón. El Santa Laura y el Nacional serían otros estadios utilizados.

Fueron solo tres semanas las que Fabián Pícaro Fernández estuvo en la U ese verano del 96. Suficiente para que todos se acuerden de él hasta hoy. No rindió en la cancha y fue protagonista de uno de los grandes escándalos de la U. Demandas y contrademandas incluidas. Quedó como el jamón del sandwich en la disputa entre René Orozco y Jorge Socías.

¿Qué pasó? En diciembre de 1995 la U se proclamaba bicampeón de la mano de Socías y preparaba el año 1996. El Lulo, que había tenido una mala experiencia en la Copa Libertadores de 1995 quedando eliminado en primera fase, necesitaba un 9 de peso para pelear el torneo en 1996. Para eso prescindiría de Juan Carlos Ibáñez y dejaría el pedido del colombiano Victor Hugo Aristizábal antes de irse de pretemporada a EEUU.

El martes 9 de enero el plantel azul arribaría al rancho de Nick Bolletieri en Bradeston, Miami, mismo lugar donde el Chino Ríos terminaría de forjar su zurda prodigiosa. Tras el arribo del martes, el plantel entrenaría una semana para enfrentar el miércoles 17 al Monterrey de Arturo Salah, sin embargo, ya en los primeros días en EEUU, la cosa comenzó a venir mal. El día viernes 12 de enero, dos días después de llegar a Miami, le sonó el teléfono a Socias. Era el dirigente Antonio Mahana con un recado del Doctor Orozco. “Se decidió contratar a Fabián Fernández, un delantero argentino de Vélez Sarsfield”, dijeron desde Chile. “¿Quién es?, no lo conozco”, respondió el Lulo. “Lo siento, ya no hay vuelta atrás. Fernández se queda porque manda Orozco”, mandó a decir el Doctor. “No estaba en mi lista. Por los antecedentes que tengo, él lleva un año sin jugar, no lo conozco”, le comentaría Socías tras recopilar información sobre el Pícaro.

Socías, quien se había ido a Miami con un acuerdo solo de palabra para aumentar su salario, y que no había sido autorizado para buscar personalmente al 9 que necesitaba, tomó la contratación del Pícaro como la última carta para presionar su renuncia. El Lulo, ídolo como jugador y bicampeón como DT, era muy cercano al dirigente Rafael Fazio, quien a la larga se convertiría en oponente acérrimo al Doctor. 

Socías dejó el equipo botado en Miami y partió a Chile el sábado 13 de enero junto al doctor Alejandro Orizola. Acusó enfermedad para volver y así no revolver el tema más de lo que estaba. Hasta ahí, pese a dejar la pretemporada, aún era el DT de la U. Su idea era arreglar la situación. Eso hasta que se enteró que la “Operación Pícaro” seguía firme y el delantero ya tenía fecha de llegada a Chle. Socías pegaría el portazo y se iría de la U el lunes 15 de enero. Orozco lo demandaría por “notable abandono de deberes”.

Aún negociando con un nuevo DT, el equipo, que se había quedado en Miami bajo el mando de Luis Rodoni primero y Hugo Carballo después, volvería a Chile. Sería el exarquero el que dirigiría a la U en la Noche Azul el 29 de enero a estadio lleno. Ese sería el día de la presentación en sociedad de Fabián Fernández, acompañado de los otros refuerzos Pablo Galdames, José Luis Sánchez y el retorno de Aníbal Pinto desde Palestino. Al argentino le preguntaban en el Aeropuerto si sería un retroceso en su carrera pasar a ser el cuarto delantero de Vélez Sarsfield a ser el 9 del campeón de Chile. Ese amistoso sería 2-2 ante Inter de Porto Alegre con dos penales, uno de Mardones y otro del Leo Rodríguez. El Pícaro Fernández ingresaría a los 67 por Goldberg. De entrada se notó que le faltaba mucho para ser el 9 que se necesitaba para ganar una Copa Libertadores. «Lento» y «tronco» fue lo menos que dijeron en las tribunas las viudas de Socias e Ibáñez, y los no tanto.

Días después de la Noche Azul, y luego de negociar con César Luis Menotti, llegaría Miguel Ángel Russo para preparar al equipo para la Copa Ciudad de Santiago. Fernández, a quien no le habían dado la 9 pese a estar disponible, y el cupo de extranjeros se llenaba con él (Vargas, Traverso, Rodríguez), seguía en consideración con la 23 en la espalda. El cuadrangular contaría con seis fechas de todos contra todos con ida y vuelta. El segundo duelo de la U, tras empatar 0-0 con Defensor en el Santa Laura el 3 de febrero, pasaría a la historia. Una triste historia para la U y el Pícaro.

El 7 de febrero ante Ferrocarril Oeste en el Nacional, recién ingresado, el argentino recibiría un pase profundo, pisaría la pelota y se iría al suelo (la imagen que acompaña al texto). En el público ni siquiera hubo silbidos, sino que directamente risas, carcajadas. En otra jugada en el torneo, Fernández intentaría hacer una chilena, conectaría, pero el balón iría directamente a su cara. En otra, manotazo en la cara al Pícaro y penal. Fernández lo celebraría como un gol. Para muchos fue lo mejor que hizo en la U. Hasta ahí Miguel Ángel Russo no tenía el crédito que tiene hoy. La gente extrañaba al Lulo Socías y el gran responsable de su partida estaba siendo un fiasco en la cancha.

La estadía de Fernández en la U duraría solo su presentación en la Noche Azul y su participación en la Copa Ciudad de Santiago, a esa altura ya denominada Copa Pícaro Fernández. “La presión lo mató”, cuenta hoy un excompañero de ese equipo. Ya no había vuelta atrás y el contrato de Fernández sería rescindido. “¿Que si fue todo conversado amablemente?, Nica”, dice hoy su mismo compañero. Fernández comentaría a sus cercanos que él «tenía una carrera en Argentina y que en Chile lo estaban tratando muy mal». Y eso que no habían redes sociales.

El Picaro Fernández le dejaría la camiseta 23 a un joven delantero llamado Eduardo Arancibia, y a los pocos días arribaría el 9: Walter Cuqui Silvani, de muchos partidos en River Plate de Argentina. Sería la primera alternativa tras Goldberg y Salas, aunque terminó jugando bastante en la Copa Libertadores y en el Torneo. 

Socías en el año 2000 le ganaría una millonaria contrademanda a la U justificando su partida de 1996 por presiones de la jefatura. De Fernández poco mas se supo. Sus mejores momentos habían sido par de años antes de llegar a la U, cuando tuvo buenas actuaciones en Gimnasia de la Plata, lo que le valió llegar al Vélez Sarsfield de Carlos Bianchi y ganar la Copa Intercontinental de 1994 ante el Milan como uno más del plantel. Lo mismo que José Luis Sánchez. Tras la U andaría por Huracán de Corrientes, Gimnasia Esgrima de Jujuy y Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, donde se retiró del profesionalismo en 1999. Ya no habían flashes, presentaciones a estadio lleno en un equipo bicampeón o miles de líneas en diarios y revistas hablando de él. El peak mediático de la carrera de Pícaro Fernández había sido en la Copa Pícaro Fernández.
