Algunos dirán Damián Malrechauffe, otros Darío Cajaravilla. Quizá también aparecerían Paulao, Miguel Ángel Acosta, Marcelo Verón, Facundo Coria, Gino Clara, Darío Lezcano, Gustavo Badell, Christian Santos, Juan, John o Fabián Castillo, Juan Carlos Cisneros o Javier Reina. Los más memoriones recordarán a Nicolás Lauria Calvo, quien jugó algunos amistosos en el verano de 1997. Son muchos los refuerzos extranjeros que no rindieron en Colo Colo, pero hubo uno que casi todo lo que hizo con la camiseta alba lo hizo mal, y que incluso sacó de sus casillas a su entrenador, quien lo sacó en el entretiempo.

El peor extranjero en la historia de Colo Colo se llama Austin Hamlet. Nigeriano, nacido el 20 de enero de 1979 y que poco después de su cumpleaños número 20 llegó hasta Santiago de Chile para probar suerte en el Colo Colo de Nelsinho Baptista en 1999.

Los albos venían de ser campeones en 1998 quemando aceite. Una decena de jugadores dejaron el club durante ese año, por lo que el DT Gustavo Benítez debió arreglárselas con lo que tenía. Cambió el esquema e hizo debutar a juveniles a destajo. Su buen desempeño hizo que a fines de ese año fuera fichado por el Racing de Santander de España. Por el paraguayo arribó el brasileño Nelsinho.

Baptista, quien llegó en helicóptero en la Noche Alba de 1999, venía a implementar un 4-1-2-3, con Marco Villaseca como contención, y Marcelo Espina y Cristián Uribe como enlaces, una posición parecida a los interiores de la actualidad. Arriba, Barticciotto, Manuel Neira y Cristián Montecinos irían por el gol. Barti había recibido la carta de nacionalización en 1998 y con su nueva nacionalidad se había parado en el Festival de Viña del Mar el 10 de febrero de 1999. Claudio Arbiza y Marcelo Espina serían los únicos dos extranjeros del plantel, guardando un cupo para el regreso de Emerson Pereira en junio, retorno desde el Perugia que finalmente sí sucedió, lo mismo que el de José Luis Sierra desde Tigres de México y el de Fernando Vergara desde Rayo Vallecano.

Con un cupo de extranjero disponible los albos salieron en busca de su quinto y último refuerzo tras Ricardo Viveros, Manuel Neira, Cristián Montecinos y Cristián Uribe, la gran revelación del torneo de 1998. A fines de enero, en medio de la histórica Copa Ciudad De Santiago que terminó con la renuncia de Roberto Hernández y la llegada de César Vaccia en la U, y con Ricardo Rojas y Marco Villaseca en la comisaria, arribó al país el delantero africano Austin Hamlet para defender las camiseta de Colo Colo.

El nigeriano había debutado en su país en el Rangers International en 1997 y venía desde el fútbol polaco, donde muy joven había sido campeón en la temporada 1997-1998 con el ŁKS Lodz, pero con muy poca presencia. El Lodz, dueño de su pase, lo envió a préstamo constantemente a fines de los 90. Llegó a Chile traído por el empresario peruano Ricky Changs, quien además traería a Pius Daniels tiempo después. Hamlet entrenó en Macul con la velocidad y la gambeta como carta de presentación. Pese a ser delantero, el gol no era lo suyo. 

El 17 de febrero de 1999, a pocos días del inicio de la Copa Libertadores, los albos sumaron un nuevo amistoso internacional tras los duelos ante Laussana de Suiza y Colonia de Alemania en el estadio Nacional. Esta vez sería en el estadio Monumental y enfrentarían al Toluca de México del DT Enrique “Ojitos” Meza y del delantero José Saturnino Cardozo. El conductor de los Diablos Rojos sería el exalbo Fabián Estay. El conductor de Colo Colo sería nada menos que Austin Hamlet.

Pese a ser atacante, Nelsinho Baptista lo probaría como enlace en lugar de Cristián Uribe, y acompañado por Marcelo Espina en la conducción. Marco Villaseca, envuelto en problemas legales por la Ley de Violencia en los Estadios, le dejaría su lugar a Rodrigo Sanhueza en la contención, y le entregaría su dorsal 18 al nigeriano de 20 años recién cumplidos. Como sabiendo que no se iba a quedar, ni siquiera le habían otorgado un número de camiseta. Los delanteros esa noche serían Barticciotto, Viveros y Montecinos.

Lo de Austin Hamlet fue extremadamente bajo. Es para muchos la peor presentación de un extranjero vistiendo la camiseta de Colo Colo, sumado además a que sus compañeros, que lo habían visto entrenar, no confiaban en él y muchas veces se lo saltaban en la creación de fútbol. Casi no acertó pases y desde la tribuna se reían de su forma de correr y moverse en la cancha. Incluso un pase en profundidad de Wilson Contreras le rebotó en su espalda.

Sus compañeros tampoco lo hicieron mucho mejor, al punto que tres jugadores del equipo titular se fueron reemplazados en el entretiempo, en el primer gran golpe de timón de Nelsinho Baptista, sacando a «viejos» y poniendo a promesas de las divisiones inferiores. Además de Hamlet, se quedarían en camarines Rodrigo Sanhueza, quien había debutado en 1997, y Ricardo Viveros, con ya varios años en Primera División, entre Huachipato y Argentinos Juniors. En su lugar ingresarían los juveniles Alejandro Escalona, Sebastián González y Manuel Villalobos.

El partido fue transmitido por Canal 13, con relatos de Alberto Fouillioux y comentarios de Mario Mauriziano, quienes no podían creer el escaso nivel de Hamlet. Al término del encuentro, Marcelo Barticciotto, siempre compuesto, alzó la voz para criticar la prueba de jugadores, aunque también hizo un mea culpa y sumó a todo el equipo al mal encuentro que terminaría 1-1. Nelsinho, por su parte, ocupó gran parte del post partido para hablar de la pésima presentación del nigeriano. Aunque tenía claro que se iría, no quiso aventurarse y habló de una evaluación durante la semana. Mientras tanto ya negociaban con el brasileño Marquinhos, exseleccionado de su país, para jugar justamente en el puesto en el que había sido probado el africano.

A los pocos días Austin Hamlet tomaría sus cosas y se marcharía casi en silencio del Monumental. Antes había declarado que le hubiera gustado jugar de delantero y no de volante, pero las excusas no servirían. Las notas en los noticieros se harían un festín con el partido de Hamlet, y su caso sería tomado con humor en la revista El Gráfico Chile.

Tras su paso por Chile el delantero volvería a Polonia, donde en pocos años logró hacerse un nombre en varios equipos de ese país. En 2004, y con solo 24 años, se retiraría del fútbol al no poder seguir viviendo en Europa por problemas con sus papeles. Volvería a Nigeria, pero no para jugar, sino que para formar niños en varias academias de clubes para que, al igual que él, pudieran dar el salto a las ligas europeas siendo jóvenes.

Tras su salida, los albos no pudieron refrendar todo lo bueno mostrado en la Copa Ciudad De Santiago. Para peor, Marquinhos, al igual que Uribe, no anduvo, mientras que Espina se iría a España por pedido de Gustavo Benítez. También partiría Nelsinho y sería reemplazado por Carlos «Mister Pipa» Durán primero y por Fernando Morena posteriormente. Finalmente lo de Hamlet no había sido lo único malo del Colo Colo 1999.
