Para los que veían un reality de Adidas en Fox Sports, el rostro de Eduardo Vargas ya era algo conocido. Quizá no tanto como el de Nelson Saavedra y Felipe Seymour, los ganadores de ese programa, pero sí recordaban una que otra habilidad de Edu, de los pocos jóvenes que no eran de divisiones inferiores de algún club. Era el segundo semestre del año 2005. Vargas no pudo competir en semis porque no pudieron ubicarlo. El delantero quedó picado. El reality lo conducía Fernando Solabarrieta.
Tras la “fama”, Vargas siguió entrenando y jugando en Renca. No estar amarrado a un club en cadetes le jugaría a favor. En verano de 2006 el DT Osvaldo Hurtado lo incluiría con 16 años en una nómina Sub 19 de jugadores de Tercera División para disputar un tradicional torneo de verano en Puerto Montt. Allá en el sur, y equipados con antigua indumentaria de la selección chilena, enfrentarían al Audax de Franco Di Santo, a la Universidad de Chile de Emanuel Vargas y Hormona Gómez, Unión Española, y al Colo Colo de Felipe Flores, Juan Pablo Arenas y un tal Arturo Vidal, quien iba camino a los 19 años.
Por la selección de Tercera División, entre los cadetes de Ferroviarios, Barnechea, Juventud Puente Alto y Luis Matte, había un hábil delantero que hasta ahí solo deslumbraba en su barrio, pero que lo haría también en el Sur. En Puerto Montt, de la mano de Arica, el Edu Vargas la rompió. Fue el goleador de su equipo en el torneo donde Colo Colo fue el campeón.
En ese enero de 2006 pudo ser el goleador absoluto con sus cinco tantos, pero no contaba con todos los penales que Vidal convertiría para los albos. En ese torneo, Vidal, quien ya había debutado en Primera en 2005, jugó en varios puestos de la defensa y el mediocampo. Fue por lejos el mejor jugador del torneo. También sería el goleador gracias a los tiros de los doce pasos. Ese cetro, eso sí, tendría que compartirlo con Eduardo Vargas, quien tenía los méritos de hacer más goles de jugada. Además, no podía ser una canillera para cada uno, el botín a repartir.
Arturo Vidal, por entonces el Celia, no tuvo problemas en ceder su regalo de goleador a su joven contrincante amateur. Ya tenía los de campeón y mejor jugador entregados por el alcalde Rabindranath Quinteros, además de la felicidad de ser campeón ante Unión Española gracias a su gol de penal. El equipo de Eduardo Vargas, el lateral derecho Francisco Bozán, el central Cristian Cofré, entre otros, se había quedado en semifinales ante los hispanos.
Vargas comenzó a tener ofertas de clubes grandes, pero ya no estaba con edad ni ganas de hacer cadetes. Entrenó en Ferroviarios y en la pretemporada de Puerto Rico Islanders hasta que Arica Hurtado, junto a Andrés Alvarado, quien lo venía siguiendo desde pequeño, se lo recomendaron a su amigo Jorge Aravena, flamante DT de Cobreloa. Allá hizo sus primeros pasos profesionales, y años después compartiría selección adulta con Arturo Vidal.
Su penúltimo gol en la selección, ante Argentina en Copa América, se lo quitó al propio Arturo Vidal tras un penal desperdiciado por el exCelia en una blanda cancha brasileña, tanto como la del Estadio Lintz de Puerto Montt. Penales y goles, el camino que los une desde ese enero de 2006, allá en el Sur, el lugar donde se conocieron.
