Central y zurdo: Cuando estuvo a punto de ir al mejor de todos

Defensor, izquierdo, exseleccionado juvenil, líder de cada defensa que integró, “superviviente” de graves lesiones. “Prometo no irme del club hasta ser campeón”, había dicho algunos años antes cuando lo vino a buscar el Olympique de Marsella tras el Sudamericano Sub 20 que disputó. Cuando ya se sintió listo, dio el OK. Lo había venido a buscar el mejor de todos. En realidad no a buscar, pero hizo la gran diferencia con Zaragoza y Atlético Madrid, los otros dos equipos que pedían por él. Mientras ellos solo peguntaban, el mejor club del continente le mandó los pasajes a él y a los dirigentes del club. Lo conocían desde hace tiempo, iba a ser clave en el proyecto del club. Todo bien, hasta los exámenes médicos. Pese a venir jugando con mucha continuidad hace años, le encontraron problemas en la rodilla que se había operado años atrás y que lo había alejado dos veces del fútbol antes de retomar el nivel que demostró en las selecciones menores.

La historia, salvo detallitos, podría ser la de Valber Huerta con Palmeiras, pero es la de Gabriel Milito con el Real Madrid en julio del 2003, quizá el caso más icónico de un jugador no pasando los exámenes médicos en el exterior. En Chile ya ha sucedido con Pepe Rojas en Botafogo, Pancho Castro en el América Mineiro y Gonzalo Fierro en Boca Juniors. Ninguno al nivel de lo sucedido con Milito y el Real Madrid, donde Independiente de Avellaneda amenazó con acciones legales, mientras Valdano ofrecía comprarlo igual por cuatro años, pero mandarlo a préstamo a los Diablos Rojos en la primera temporada. En Avellaneda pusieron el grito en el cielo. “Dicen que está lesionado, pero igual lo quieren.. lo que pasa es que Milito no vende camisetas”, decían los dirigentes que aún barajaban otras ofertas sobre la mesa. Rechazaron al Real Madrid y se fueron a negociar con Zaragoza. A los pocos días ya era jugador maño.

De ahí para adelante lo de Milito dio para una película. El “Cojo” se convirtió en uno de los mejores jugadores de la Liga Española en época de galácticos y demases. Fueron cuatro años en Zaragoza, siendo capitán y emblema de las mejores campañas del club, incluso compartiendo equipo con su hermano Diego, además de Aimar, D´Alessandro y Gerard Piqué, obligado a jugar de volante central ante la presencia de Sergio y Gaby Milito en la zaga. Tras cuatro años en Zaragoza, los grandes de España fueron a buscarlo. Tímidamente el Real Madrid volvió a preguntar por él. El zurdo argentino había sido figura cada vez que enfrentó a los merengues. Se crecía. Él también creía que su no fichaje había sido algo más que ese examen acusando una vieja lesión de rodilla. Fue el mercado donde se gastó casi todo el dinero en David Beckham. Cuando le dieron el No a Milito y solo se quedaron el regreso de préstamo de Raúl Bravo.

Tras Zaragoza, y con nuevo estatus, Milito pudo elegir y se fue al Barcelona. Ahí también se convirtió en figura y caudillo. Con 17 años había sido líder de la Argentina Sub 20 de Cambiasso, Montenegro y Galleti, y capitán de la Sub 23 de Riquelme, Aimar, Saviola, Scaloni y Cambiasso. Con 20 años llevó la cinta en Independiente, el más joven la historia del club. Con poco más de 20 fue el capitán del Independiente campeón del Tolo Gallego. El Barcelona no le quedó chico. Fue figura y multicampeón en el archirrival del Real Madrid. Las vueltas de la vida.

Ya como DT, estuvo trabajando en Chile dirigiendo a O’Higgins entre 2017 y 2018. Desde la banca celeste enfrentó varias veces a Valber Huerta, probablemente, y guardando todas las proporciones, el jugador chileno más parecido a él. Claro, no hay mucho defensor zurdo, con eso ya sacaba ventajas. Ahora se parecen un poco más tras el rechazo, momentáneo, del Palmeiras, el mejor equipo del continente. Quizá se parezca más cuando Valber demuestre que esa lesión quedó hace varios años en el pasado y pueda aclarar que es un defensor de primer nivel. No vaya a ser cosa que terminé yéndose al rival Sao Paulo, en donde jugaba Valber en los equipos de Tele Santana, el ídolo de su padre. Después no digan que es solo fútbol.
