Tuvo varias oportunidades, hasta que un día partió. La estadía de Juan Quiroga en Universidad de Chile duró cuatro temporadas. Aportó en el título de 1995, como opción para Valencia, Leo Rodríguez, Víctor Hugo y Hugo Bravo. Ese año jugó 11 partidos e hizo dos goles. En 1996 estuvo el primer semestre, pero en el segundo volvió a La Serena para ser campeón de la Primera B, pero con escasa presencia. En 1997 lo mismo. Importante en el Apertura, pero mandado a préstamo a Puerto Montt en el Clausura. En 1998 lo recibieron de vuelta en la U y le dieron la 14 de Castañeda. Jugó bastante en Copa Chile, fue campeón, pero en el torneo volvió a sucumbir ante Edison Mafla primero y Leo Rodríguez después. En 1999 partiría, ahora en forma definitiva, a Puerto Montt. Cuatro años en los azules, un torneo nacional, una Copa Chile y dos préstamos.

La carrera de Juan Quiroga es bastante mejor que solo su paso por la U. Es ídolo en Puerto Montt, Temuco, Cobresal y La Serena. Pese a ser volante, se cansó de hacer goles en los equipos que estuvo. Formado en la Santa Inés, una especie de Academia Tahuichi Aguilera de la Cuarta Región. Destacó rápidamente en La Serena, que por esos años entregaba a Ricardo Rojas, Francisco Rojas, Carlos Barraza y Juan Quiroga al fútbol chileno. Luego, Felipe Flores. En 1994 La Vieja fue una de las revelaciones del torneo chileno, justo en el año que explotó Marcelo Salas. En 1995 serían compañeros en Universidad de Chile. Juan era un habitual seleccionado juvenil Sub 23 entre 1993 y 1994, más algunos microciclos de proyección. Nunca pudo debutar por la Roja adulta.

Jugó entre 1992 y 2009. Se retiró en Coquimbo Unido, pero no se cuenta como traición. Nació en el puerto pirata, pero fue en La Serena donde le dieron la oportunidad de ser jugador profesional. Hizo su primer gol en 1993, explotó en 1994, fue campeón en 1995. Le hizo un golazo a Boca Juniors de Maradona en la celebración del título. Especialista en penales, estando en Temuco hizo 15 consecutivos. En Cobresal y La Serena se hizo grande en el fútbol del Norte tras sus buenos pasos en el Sur jugando en Puerto Montt y la Araucanía. Con el tiempo se convirtió en uno de los goleadores históricos del fútbol chileno. Sí, un volante. A lo Chamaco Valdés.

Hoy trabaja con divisiones inferiores. Niños que no lo vieron jugar, que quizá no saben que alguna vez el fútbol se jugó con conductores clásicos. Con un volante ofensivo detrás de dos delanteros. Quiroga era uno de esos. El que salvo en la U, donde usó la 17 y la 14, siempre le dieron la 10 en donde estuvo. El 10 salmonero, el 10 del pije, el 10 de Cobresal, de La Serena y de Coquimbo. Una Vieja muy querida. Una Vieja que dejó legado.
