“Yo me pongo, yo me pongo”, gritaba seguro Cristián Álvarez a Pablo Lenci, Miguel Ramírez y Arturo Norambuena. “Yo la cagué, así que yo me pongo”, repetía el más esmirriado de las opciones cruzadas para jugar al arco en caso de una emergencia. ¿Cómo habían llegado hasta ahí? Un minuto antes el Huaso Álvarez, stopper derecho de la UC 2002 de Juvenal Olmos, había perseguido por atrás a Mauricio Pinilla en un ataque de Universidad Chile. Álvarez intentó sacarle el balón, pero terminó derribándolo y haciéndolo caer con su rodilla sobre el cuello del arquero cruzado Johnathan Walker. Inmediatamente todos los que vieron la acción notaron que era grave. Era lesión de Walker, penal y expulsión. Lo peor para la UC era que ya había hecho los tres cambios. ¿Lo bueno? El revuelo provocó que el árbitro Carlos Chandía se olvidara de la expulsión y que el mismo infractor tomara el lugar del arquero estadounidense que salía inconsciente de la cancha. La falta fue en el minuto 70 de partido, el penal se ejecutó casi en el 78. Quedaban 20 minutos con el Huaso en el arco y un 1-1 en el marcador.
Ese clásico universitario se jugó el domingo 12 de octubre de 2002 por la novena fecha del Torneo Clausura. Era por la fase regular, en la cuarta vez que se enfrentaban ese año tras el duelo de la fase regular del Apertura (1-1) y el ida y vuelta de las semifinales de ese torneo (3-3 y 2-1 para la UC). Cruzados y azules se volverían a encontrar en diciembre, en semifinales del Clausura. Otra vez la llave sería para la UC con un 0-0 y un 0-1 gracias a autogol de Pedro Reyes. Los seis clásicos universitarios del año se jugaron en el Nacional.
Pero volvamos al duelo de la fase regular en octubre. Los azules comenzaron ganando a los 14’ con gol del Heidi González, mientras que a los 36’ empataba Patricio Ormazábal. La lucha era por terminar primeros en la fase regular para luego definir de local en la ronda de playoffs. El segundo tiempo se iba a jugar con dientes apretados y la U se vería un poco mejor. Por eso no extrañó cuando Pinilla quedó solo ante el meta cruzado y la única opción de Álvarez fue tirarse al piso a lo que saliera. Salió penal y lesión de su arquero.
Con el Huaso ya determinado a ponerse bajo los tres palos, comenzó el diálogo con Lenci, Ramírez y Norambuena. Todos estuvieron de acuerdo en la intuición del improvisado arquero. El ejecutante Pedro González tiraría un zurdazo cruzado, a la izquierda del portero. La decisión ya estaba tomada y Lenci se lo recordó hasta el último momento. Todo esto lo había escuchado el árbitro Carlos Chandía, pero claramente no el Heidi. Las cartas estaban echadas.
Álvarez tomó la camiseta 12 de Branco Matijevic, quien había quedado como segundo arquero de la UC tras el repentino retiro de Nelson Cossio. “La camiseta y los guantes me quedaban gigantes, el arco del Nacional para qué decir”, recordaba después el Huaso. “Yo no tenía nada que perder. Yo no soy arquero, no tenía la obligación, él sí”, decía en alusión al delantero Pedro González, quien escuchaba como los compañeros de Álvarez le gritaban que se moviera un poco, que hiciera show. Con un estático arquero las esperanzas eran casi nulas.
A los 77’ con 30’’ Chandía dio la orden. Justo antes le había hablado a Álvarez. De acuerdo a lo que muestra la grabación del partido, el árbitro se acercó segundos antes de la ejecución y le dijo «a tu izquierda va a ir, tírate a tu izquierda, ya”. Y así fue. El 18 de los azules sacó un zurdazo cruzado, tal como lo vaticinaron Álvarez, Ramírez, Lenci, Norambuena y Chandía. Hacia allá voló Álvarez y lo contuvo. Luego salió rápido con Carlos Verdugo, ignorando a sus compañeros que le pedían calma. “Pude haber levantado la pelota, mostrársela a la barra, pero quise salir en contragolpe. Hasta antes del penal no estaba nervioso, pero después sí me vino el cagazo. Se iban a venir con todo”, narró el Huaso con los años.
Días después fue Carlos Chandía quien debió dar explicaciones. “Como todos sus compañeros le decían tírate a la izquierda, yo le dije ’tírate a la izquierda’. Reconozco que eso no se debe hacer por ningún motivo porque nuestra misión es simplemente aplicar las reglas y advertirle al jugador que no se debe adelantar de la línea de meta. Lo demás no debí haberlo hecho. Lo tomo como falta de experiencia, una chiquillada, una humorada», dijo el árbitro, quien luego fue castigado por la Comisión de Árbitros.
Después de atajar el penal vino lo más difícil para Álvarez, sostener el arco en el 1-1. “Tapé un tiro de lejos, Albert Acevedo salvó un centro con un cabezazo y Chandía cobró foul una pelota que se me pasó por debajo del cuerpo de puro malo no más”. La más difícil, y la que un entregado Álvarez vio como gol, fue un derechazo pifiado del propio González, otra vez desde el punto penal. Con 10 jugadores y con un defensor en el arco por 20 minutos, la UC casi lo gana con un cabezazo, pero con el 1-1 final se dieron por pagados. Mantenían la cima y la distancia con la U de Víctor Hugo Castañeda.
Hasta hoy se recuerda ese partido del 12 de octubre de 2002, pese a que solo era uno más de la fase regular, en donde hasta el octavo podía salir campeón con una buena racha en playoffs. El Huaso y Chandía le dieron el tinte necesario para que se convirtiera en un duelo inolvidable hasta hoy. Para muchos, el comienzo de la idolatría cruzada por el Huaso, el primer jugador chileno de campo en contener un tiro desde los doce pasos.
