Tras el Aston Villa pasaría al Middlesbrough, donde otra vez sería capitán al poco llegar al camarín. Se retiraría en 2006, sin poder jugar en equipos grandes de Inglaterra pese a una larga estadía en la Selección. Esa no sería su gran pena. La gran tristeza seguía siendo ese penal fallado jugando de local ante Alemania. Era un equipo que encantaba con Seaman, Adams, Platt, Ince, McManaman, Gascoigne y Shearer. Estaba todo dado. Él, un actor secundario de ese equipazo, lo había arruinado.
Pero de secundario pasaría a protagónico. En 2016 tomaría la selección tras sus pasos por el Boro y la Sub 21 de Inglaterra. Ahí conocería a gran parte de los jugadores que le comenzaron a dar alegrías. Primero en el Mundial de Rusia, llegando a semifinales con un equipo que estaba recién afiatándose y armándose para dar pronto el gran zarpazo. Gran zarpazo que puede llegar ahora, ante la Italia de Mancini. Otra vez en Wembley, el lugar donde falló su penal ante Alemania, y donde no pudo jugar la final ante la República Checa. Digno del mejor guionista inglés. El camino de Southgate, 25 años después.
