El domingo 26 de junio de 2011 es una fecha fatídica para River Plate. Quedó marcada para siempre al decretarse el primer descenso del histórico club argentino. Si bien ese Clausura 2010-2011 fue paupérrimo, la debacle millonaria fue la acumulación de varios años de cosas mal hechas. Por la banca de la Banda Sangre, desde la consagración de Diego Simeone y Alexis Sánchez en 2008, pasaron 4 técnicos y dos presidentes. El Cholo se marchó siendo colista en el Apertura 2008-2009 a fines de 2008. Tras él pasaron Néstor Gorosito, Leonardo Astrada, Ángel Cappa y Juan José López. En la testera ya estaba Daniel Passarella.
Fue con Néstor Gorosito como entrenador que el cuadro riverplatense comenzó a alejarse de su grandeza, al menos en la contratación de jugadores. El Pipo permitió que semi desconocidos jugadores de Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay llegaran a probarse a uno de los equipos más populares del mundo. Antes de empezar el Apertura 2009-2010 Gorosito pidió un zaguero central. En su lista estaba el veterano Roberto Ayala, el joven Nicolás Otamendi, el colombiano Iván Córdoba y Mauricio Romero, un sólido zaguero central de Lanús, con presencias en la selección argentina. La cosa ya estaba mal en Núñez, y desde la dirigencia les ofrecieron llamativas alternativas. Ya habían fichado, con dificultades, al volante paraguayo Miguel Paniagua, otro semidesconocido jugador, hoy en la lista de los peores refuerzos del club. También iban por el delantero Pablo Velásquez del modesto Rubio Ñú. No lograron convencerlo. Así de mal estaba la cosa.
Entre los nombres ofrecidos como zagueros por la dirigencia estaba el paraguayo Javier Cohene Mereles, el uruguayo Rodrigo Brasesco y el chileno Nicolás Larrondo. ¿Los defensas más promisorios de sus países? Para nada. Jugadores jóvenes que habían pasado por un buen momento y que buscaban nuevos horizontes. Qué mejor que intentarlo en el mítico River Plate. El salto era gigante.
El caso del chileno Nicolás Larrondo, de Universidad de Chile, llamaba la atención. Había sido titular indiscutido como stopper derecho en el Mundial Sub 20 de Canadá de 2007, donde la Roja enfrentó a Argentina en semifinales. Antes, también había destacado en el Sudamericano de la categoría. Al menos por nombre los argentinos lo tenían observado. Sin embargo, en la U nunca pudo ganarse la titularidad en la época de Arturo Salah primero y Sergio Markarían después. Eso sí, tenía un gol en un clásico universitario, claro que jugando con suplentes. Esa vez hasta Hugo Notario fue titular. El video de la anotación también había llegado hasta los escritorios de River Plate, Pese a ser una de las “joyas” de inferiores, los azules lo dejaron con su carta en su poder a mediados del 2009.
La presencia de los desconocidos Larrondo, Brasesco y Cohene Mereles comenzó a hacer ruido en el plantel del River Plate. Fue el mismísimo Ariel Ortega quien levantó la voz en una conferencia de prensa y luego en un programa radial. “Queda un poco chocante probar jugadores. Es algo a lo que River no está acostumbrado. Eso nunca pasó acá y le hace mal al club. Hay que formar un equipo para darle alegría a la gente», comentó el Burrito.
Rápidamente el DT Gorosito debió salir al paso de las declaraciones de uno de los símbolos del club. “Uno es empleado del club y lo acepta por más que primero dio otros nombres como prioridad. Pero lo seguro es que es mejor probarlos y verlos en vivo y en directo que hacerlo por videos. Porque por videos, si son defensores, no los pasa nadie; y si son delanteros, no les saca nadie la pelota”, respondía el Pipo.
Tal como reality futbolero, como el de Rojo Fama Contrafama con Cristián Briceño, el técnico millonario debía elegir solo a uno de los tres postulantes. El paraguayo Javier Cohene Mereles había llegado primero, por lo que llevaba la ventaja. Al ser entrevistado tras su prematuro retiro, el chileno Larrondo comentó que la decisión de Gorosito se vio finalmente influenciada por una lesión suya. “Cuando terminé contrato con la U en 2009, venía saliendo de la lesión de la rodilla, que me había operado dos veces. En River Plate me querían ver las condiciones por dos semanas y en la tercera se me rompieron los meniscos”, contaba en 2021 Larrondo. El 2020, en entrevista con Emol, incluso recordaba sus días entrenando con Marcelo Gallardo. “Gallardo es un crack. El primero en acercarse cuando llegué al camarín y me dijo que cualquier cosa que necesitara que lo llamara, que él lo resolvía. Me querían ver una semana, tenía todo acordado para firmar y al tercer entrenamiento me rompí el menisco, porque la operación que me había hecho cuando estuve en la U no había sido muy buena», recordaba Nico.
Finalmente el único que pasó la prueba fue Cohene Mereles, pero jamás jugó un partido oficial por River Plate durante ese semestre, donde los titulares fueron Nicolás Sánchez y Gustavo Cabral. A fines de 2009 el paraguayo partiría del club sin pena ni gloria, igual como fue su carrera, y la del uruguayo Rodrigo Brasesco. Probablemente nombres que nunca escucharon.
Lo de Larrondo no fue mucho mejor. Tras sus días en River Plate debió estar seis meses en recuperación antes de fichar por Huachipato en 2010. Recién pasaba los 20 años, pero las lesiones siempre estuvieron presentes. Tras su temporada en la Usina, pasó a O’Higgins el 2011, a Rangers de Talca el 2012, al Arles Avignon de Francia ese mismo 2012, a Coquimbo Unido el 2013 y a La Serena en 2014-2015, club donde se retiró con solo 27 años, pero pudiendo decir que fue un fijo en el tercer puesto del Mundial Sub 20 de 2007, campeón con la U en el Apertura 2009 y con un paso de algunos días por el gigante River Plate junto a Ortega y Gallardo. Claro, en los días más negros del club, pero ese dato se puede omitir.
