La carrera del Gato tuvo esos detalles ayudados por la fortuna, por deserciones de terceros, por estar de protagonista en momentos gloriosos. Silva, un buen relevo ante alguna ausencia de Marcelo Díaz, Arturo Vidal o Charles Aránguiz, estuvo al alcance de la mano de Sampaoli cuando el entrenador se dio cuenta que no podía confiar en el casi inactivo Marcos González en el Mundial 2014. Para muchos, una vuelta de mano por irse en 2012 de la U a Flamengo cuando Sampaoli quería ir a pelear la Copa Libertadores con los azules.
Marcos González estuvo en la nómina ante Alemania, pero en los entrenamientos Sampaoli comenzó a montar su plan maestro para enfrentar partidos ante potencias en Brasil 2014: una línea de tres con el pequeño Gary Medel de líbero, y con Francisco Silva y Gonzalo Jara como stoppers. Atrás quedaba la posición del Pitbull como central derecho y el Lobo del Aire como eje de la zaga. La apuesta resultó. Pese a la derrota, la Roja jugó uno de los mejores partidos de la Era Sampaoli ante una Alemania con todas sus figuras. En ese esquema también prescindía de Valdivia o Fernández como creadores, y afianzaba el esquema de laterales volantes. Ante Alemania fue Beausejour, pero en el Mundial sería Mena. Ante los germanos Felipe Gutiérrez estuvo por Marcelo Díaz, pero el Chelo era inamovible. Ese 3-5-2 iba a ser el esquema para desafiar a los mejores. Para eso iba a ser clave el estado del improvisado Francisco Silva.
Y el Gato fue importante no más. Fue figura ante España, Holanda y Brasil como zaguero, habiendo llegado a la Roja como volante. Para la Copa América 2015 una inactividad, y el cambio de esquema para favorecer el ingreso de Jorge Valdivia lo alejó de la Selección Chilena. Sampaoli se la iba a jugar con un 4-3-1-2, con una nómina pensada en ser ofensivos jugando de local. Las lesiones a último minuto de Carlos Carmona y Edson Puch permitieron los ingresos de José Pedro Fuenzalida y Francisco Silva. La vieja confiable, parte uno.
En Chile 2015 el Gato Silva no jugó ningún minuto hasta antes de la final. Sin embargo, la expulsión de Gonzalo Jara ante Uruguay, sumado a los bajos rendimientos de Pepe Rojas y Miiko Albornoz, hicieron que otra vez Jorge Sampaoli recurriera a Silva, quien esta vez había entrado a la nómina por la puerta de atrás. El DT diseñó una línea de tres atrás, con Silva como stopper derecho, con Medel por la izquierda siguiendo a Messi, y con Marcelo Díaz como un líbero que enrtraba y salía de la zona. Otra vez Francisco Silva había cumplido. La vieja confiable, parte dos. Esta vez para ser campeones de América por primera vez.
En 2016, lo mismo. Otra vez en el lugar y momento indicado. Pese a no ser titular en la Copa América Centenario 2016 de EEUU, fue quien, gracias a su gran pegada de derecha, pasó a la historia por lanzar el penal decisivo para el bicampeonato ante Argentina. La vieja confiable, parte tres.
Siempre estuvo listo, incluso cuando Gustavo Poyet lo necesitó para reemplazar a Ignacio Saavedra por sobre Juan Fuentes. Pese a todas sus lesiones, y como Fernando Gago en Vélez Sarsfield, se retiró jugando como titular. Estuvo en el once inicial en los dos últimos duelos antes de decir adiós. Él sabía que no habían sido sus mejores partidos, también sabía que las molestias físicas lo iban a perseguir mientras fuera jugador profesional. Perdía pelotas, le ganaban en velocidad, cojeaba.
