“Proceso”, “Proyecto”. Las palabras se repetían en todas las declaraciones que Arturo Salah, DT de la Roja, daba a los medios desde que asumió en 1990. Sin los jugadores de Colo Colo durante casi todo 1991, se las arregló para sumar nuevos nombres a la selección. Algunos en edad para el Preolímpico de 1992 en Paraguay y otros en un segundo grupo. En esas nóminas entraban jugadoes como los defensas Juan Rivera, Ronald Fuentes y Luis Abarca; los laterales Fernando Cornejo, Andrés Romero, Marcelo Miranda y Fabián Guevara; comodines como Rodrigo Gómez y Nelson Parraguez, más nuevas variantes en ofensiva, donde destacaban Juan Ramón Garrido, Cristian Bravo, Eduardo Cofré, Luis Guarda o el Tunga González. Entre todos esos estaba la nueva joya del fútbol chileno: Marcelo Vega.

El Tobi había debutado allá por mitad de los 80 en Atacama siendo aún un niño. En 1991 Unión Española se quedó con sus servicios para juntarlo con José Luis Sierra y Aníbal Tunga González, quien venía desde O’Higgins. Los tres estuvieron en la prenómina de Aruro Salah, pero solo el Tunga y el Tobi tuvieron una camiseta en la Copa América de Chile. A González le dieron la 21 y a Marcelo Vega la 22, la última disponible. Al talentoso copiapino había que llevarlo para que compartiera con Rubio, Zamorano, Yáñez, Basay y el Coke Contreras. Era el apuntado a ser referente en los próximos años.

Y sí fue importante en los 90. Fue clave en las Clasificatorias a Francia 98, aunque luego no tuvo oportunidades en el Mundial, salvo el “homenaje” de Nelson Acosta, poniéndolo un tiempo ante Brasil, con Chile casi eliminado. Ese fue su último partido en la Roja. En toda su carrera en la selección jugó 30 partidos y solo hizo un gol. Esa anotación fue el 30 de mayo de 1991 ante Uruguay en Santa Laura. Era el último amistoso de Salah antes de recibir a los jugadores de Colo Colo, que un día antes, el 29 de mayo, había jugado la primera final de América ante Olimpia en Paraguay. Horas después del título el DT de la Roja daría la nómina definitiva de 22 jugadores. Se presumía que estaría Rubén Martínez.

Lo del 30 de mayo en Santa Laura fue un argumento más para que Salah dejara al Trigoleador fuera de la Copa. En su lugar irían González y Vega, quien había sido una de las figuras en el triunfo por 2-1 ante el equipo charrúa que vino a Chile con sus nombres estelares para la Copa que empezaba un mes después. Fernando Alvez fue el arquero. El exColo Colo Leo Ramos el lateral derecho y Paolo Montero el izquierdo. Eber Moas y Daniel Felipe Revelez los centrales. También estaban los exUnión Española César Silvera y Héctor Indio Morán, el exAntofagasta Edgard Borges, Rubén Pereira, Gustavo Ferreyra y Víctor López. Entrarían el exConcepción Williams Martínez, Rubén Dos Santos y Venancio Ramos.

Ese jueves la Roja de Salah salió con Toledo; Romero, Abarca, Fuentes, Miranda; Cornejo, Gómez, Estay, Contreras; Vega y Guarda. En el segundo tiempo ingresarían Juan Rivera y Aníbal González. El Tunga haría el 2-0 a los 81’ tras la apertura de la cuenta de Marcelo Vega a los 64 minutos, en un tiro de González que devolvió el travesaño y Vega lo transformó en gol con una palomita. Tunga y Tobi las hicieron todas. Los ayudaba el Coke.

El 2-1 en los descuentos sería un autogol de Abarca, uno de Los tantos de ese equipo que se quedaría fuera de la Copa América. La defensa completa sería de Colo Colo, el equipo de Jozic que seis días después del Chile – Uruguay se titularía campeón de América. Salah por esos días decía “los jugadores solo cambiarán de DT y de lugar de entrenamiento”. También cambiarían de esquema. Salah insistiría por el 4-4-2 en vez del 3-3-1-3 de Jozic. Mendoza pasaría de carrilero a lateral en línea de cuatro. Margas se convertiría en lateral izquierdo. Pizarro se centraría, Garrido ya no sería líbero. El Cheíto pasaría a ser primer central o volante de contención cuando Vilches volvía a la zaga. Las incrustaciones serían de primer nivel. Toledo por Morón, Rubio por Barticciotto, el Coke Contreras, Fabián Estay, el Pillo Vera, mientras que Marcelo Vega no sumaría minutos en toda la Copa.

Tras el tanto a Uruguay, un mes antes de la Copa, se esperaban muchos  más goles del Tobi, pero solo volvería a anotar en amistosos Clase B, como en el torneo de Huelva de 1992. Rumbo a Francia 98 fue un perfecto asistidor, pero estuvo lejos de las redes. Fue segundo delantero en el Chile – Argentina de 1997, pero no pudo convertir. Se quedó con solo un gol oficial por la Roja. El que le hizo a Fernando Alvez un 30 de mayo de 1991 ante 4923 personas en el estadio en el que él jugaba, ese Santa Laura pintado con la bandera española.
