“El día que Brasil vendió su camiseta” le llaman en Brasil. “El día que Cobresal jugó de rojo”, le llamamos en Chile. Como las mejores historias de Barrabases, el 9 de diciembre de 1987 el equipo minero cambió sus colores y representó a Chile en un amistoso, nada menos que de visita ante Brasil.
La Federación Brasileña de Fútbol estaba muy necesitada de dinero tras caer por penales ante Francia en México 1986, y por goleada ante Chile en la Copa América de 1987. Así, comenzó a ingeniárselas para hacer crecer sus arcas. Necesitaba ingresos extra, por lo que alcanzó un acuerdo por 40.000 dólares para lucir la publicidad de Coca Cola en la camiseta ‘verdeamarela’, única vez en la historia que se patrocinó en su pecho la camiseta más ganadora del mundo.
Pero ese es tema de ellos. Lo que a nosotros nos importa es que Chile fue parte de ese hecho histórico. También en busca de mayores ingresos, la FBF planificó varios amistosos en diferentes ciudades de Brasil, uno de ellos fue frente a Chile en Uberlandia.
La Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional, instaurada con ese nombre ese mismo 1987, había aceptado el amistoso para fines de año y le entregó el cargo a Manuel Rodríguez Araneda, por ese entonces DT de Cobresal, quien estuvo en el puesto solo por ese partido gracias a las notables campañas hechas con los mineros. Orlando Aravena, quien había dirigido siete partidos en 1987, retomaría el cargo en 1988, sentándose en la banca durante 34 encuentros hasta el fatídico Maracanazo del Cóndor Rojas.
El Guerrillero no iba a improvisar y se fue a la segura. Llamó a las mejores figuras de su Cobresal y los reforzó con algunos jugadores que ya habían estado en la Roja (Mario Osbén, Cobreloa; Patricio Reyes, U. de Chile; Jaime Pizarro, Colo Colo; Osvaldo Hurtado, UC) y otros de más bajo perfil (Leonel Pedreros, Fernández Vial; Francisco Ugarte, Unión Española).
La albinaranja teñida de roja esa noche saltó a la cancha del Parque Do Bahia de Uberlandia con Mario Osbén; Patricio Reyes, Juan Rivera, Gustavo Huerta (Vladimir Bigorra), Leonel Pedreros; Julio Suazo (Francisco Ugarte), Jaime Pizarro, Manuel Pedreros; Sergio Salgado (Iván Zamorano), Osvaldo Hurtado y Rubén Martínez.
Los brasileños, por su parte, tenían a varios jugadores que se consagrarían campeones de América en 1989 y serían mundialistas en Italia 90. El Scratch formó con Gilmar; Washington II, Eduardo II, Ricardo Gomes, Valdo, Renato, Sergio Araujo, Pita, Douglas, Luizinho y Tedoro. Luego entrarían Milton, Raí, Nelsinho y Batista.
El partido fue 2-1 para el equipo dirigido por Carlos Alberto. Los nacionales abrieron la cuenta con tanto de Rubén Martínez, en su debut con la Roja, a los 35 minutos. La verdeamarela lo daría vuelta con goles de Valdo (46`) y Renato (53`).
Pese a perder, Chile volvió con la frente alto. Pese a ganar, Brasil recibió tremendo tirón de orejas por parte de la FIFA por ponerle publicidad a su camiseta. Luego lo haría Colombia con la marca Bavaria en 1993, otra vez ante Chile, además de otro amistoso ante Ecuador.
Manuel Rodríguez nunca más se sentaría en la banca de Chile y varios jugadores de ese encuentro no volverían a ser nominados a la Roja por los futuros técnicos. Ese 1987 aprovecharon su minuto de fama y llegaron a jugar por Chile, ante Brasil en Brasil. ¿Si Barrabases fue campeón del mundo, por qué ellos no podían ser seleccionados?
