La altitud ha sido el gran enemigo de Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay. Antes de Francia 1998 llevaron hasta la Fifa un reglamento para prohibir partidos sobre los 2500 metros de altura. Qué le importaba a los europeos, a los asiáticos, a los africanos. Ése era un tema de Conmebol y Concacaf, donde selecciones y equipos profesionales se desenvuelven en altitud. Fue todo muy turbio, entre cuatro paredes, donde el presidente de la Federación uruguaya, Eugenio Figueredo, y el de la brasileña, Walter Teixeira, llevaban la batuta. Claro, los bolivianos le habían ganado a ambos en la altura rumbo a EEUU 1994. Habían clasificado al Mundial y eliminado a los charrúas. En ese tiempo se jugaba en dos zonas. Bolivia había tenido cuatro partidos de local. Suficientes para ir a un Mundial.
Rumbo a Francia 1998 se había propuesto jugar todos contra todos. Bolivia votó a favor, pero los poderosos del Continente, donde se había sumado Julio Grondona, titular de Argentina, tenían preparado este veto a La Paz. La Fifa presentó unos informes médicos truchos, que se desdecían con la cantidad de días de aclimatación. En uno aseveraban que eran 15, en otros que eran 10. Con 18 fechas por jugarse, no daban los tiempos para los que venían desde Europa. Esa era la excusa. Finalmente fue el propio Grondona el que se abrió a una votación, solo garantizada en un viaje a La Paz en busca de adhesión para otros proyectos. Chile pensaba votar con los poderosos. La historia dice que los periodistas Danilo Díaz y Juan Cristóbal Guarello convencieron con números en mano a Alfredo Asfura para que Chile aceptara jugar en La Paz. La historia avalaba a la Roja y perjudicaba a los grandes del Continente. Chile se dio vuelta y ganó el bloque de los débiles. Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia tenían sedes en la altura. Venezuela votaba con ellos. Perú y Chile manejaban estadios en altitud en caso de emergencia. El de Chile era en Calama. Esa emergencia llegó.
Lo de Calama no es nuevo. Luis Santibáñez quiso llevar a Paraguay allá en los 80, y la opción de jugar ahí, sobre todo con Argentina, siempre ha estado. Rumbo a Francia 1998 la albiceleste perdió en Quito y en Bolivia. Fue en Ecuador cuando su DT Daniel Passarella inmortalizó la frase que la pelota no doblaba. Era pánico, pavor a la altitud.
El duelo con Argentina de local en ese proceso era ya sabiendo las derrotas en Bolivia y Quito, y con Cobreloa en un buen nivel, poniendo varios jugadores en la selección. Cornejo, Miranda, Riveros y Pedro González era habitué. Eso sí, el estadio era muy pequeño. Ahí murió la idea. Se jugó en Santiago y se perdió el único partido de local en esas Eliminatorias.
Lo de los grandes en la altitud siguió siendo tema hasta que Bolivia levantó por fin cualquier tipo de veto con Evo Morales jugando un partido en la montaña y con la frase “se juega donde se vive”. La Argentina se comió una goleada 6-1, los uruguayos siguieron sufriendo ahí. Para Chile no era tan dramático. Ganó hasta con Olmos y Borghi, y cuando perdió no fue por sofocación. No ha sido tema, para los argentinos sí. Desde “la pelota no dobla” hasta “equipos B” llenos de jugadores del medio local que se han ido a aclimatar con anticipación. Varios se borran antes. Se limpian de las amarillas o acusan lesión. Rumbo a Qatar 2002, en octubre del 2020, volvieron a ganar en la altura. Un dato que suma para los que no quieren ir a Calama a enfrentar a una Argentina clasificada en enero.
Ya ante Brasil, antes de ir a Quito, se pensó en Calama, pero no dieron los tiempos. Ahora está todo dado. Un «win win» dicen en la Anfp. Se juega ante Argentina y sirve como preparación para Bolivia. El temor es tanto, que en el reglamento dice que no se pueden informar sedes con menos de tres meses de anticipación, y entre los requisitos, además de los hoteles, aeropuertos, carreteras, etc, está que no puede estar en altura. El antecedente es que Argentina omitió todos esos pedidos para jugar ante Chile en Santiago del Estero por motivos políticos. No debería haber problema. El resto está todo OK. Solo faltaría que Calama o Antofagasta reciban vuelos internacionales. Un trámite.
Lo cierto es que la altitud no garantiza nada. Todos han ganado y perdido ahí. Lo mismo que Chile en Santiago. En el Nacional, en San Carlos o el Monumental. Está todo dado para que por primera vez se juegue en Calama y nos saquemos ese cachito que nos viene dando vueltas desde España 82. Justo nos toca Argentina y Uruguay, justo los que más odian los estadios muy por sobre el nivel del mar. ¿Y si perdemos? Se le dará la bendición y hasta nuevo aviso, pero al menos nos habremos sacado el empacho. Quedará como mito eso que en la altura les hacíamos cuatro. Mismo mito de los 2.800 metros de altura. En realidad son 2.250, pero en los 80 y 90 había que meter miedo. Es que «siempre es difícil jugar a 2.800 KILÓMETROS de altura».
