Los jugadores argentinos con lazos con Chile se transformaron casi en obsesión para Jorge Sampaoli en su paso por La Roja. Primero convenció a Pedro Pablo Hernández, pero luego recibió un No de Mauro Zárate. Para la Copa América 2015 solo unos trámites burocráticos alejaron a German Lanaro del Chile campeón. Tras la obtención del título, cuatro nuevos jugadores trasandinos entrarían en carpeta. El primero fue el delantero Leonardo Ulloa, otro que dijo que no. Luego vendrían tres apuestas que se venían abriendo camino en el fútbol argentino: Leonardo Gil, Matías Catalán y Luciano Cabral. Solo a éste último lograron traerlo a selecciones menores, sin embargo problemas judiciales lo alejaron del fútbol y hoy cumple condena en una cárcel de Argentina. El lateral Catalán, hoy en México, siempre ha estado en stand by, mientras que el Colo Gil ha sido seguido por Sampaoli, Pizzi, Rueda y Lasarte, estando solo en un microciclo del uruguayo.
Leonardo Roque Gil, nacido en Río Gallegos, tiene doble nacionalidad gracias a su abuela chilena. Además tiene primos y tíos en Puerto Natales. Cuando empezó a sonar en la Era Sampaoli jugaba en Estudiantes de La Plata. En sus inicios era un sacrificado volante central, pero en los Pincharratas comenzó a jugar de lateral debido a que el puesto de quite lo ocupaba Santiago Ascacibar, una de las joyas del club, quien incluso le había quitado la titularidad a Rodrigo Braña. A Ascacibar lo acompañaba Israel Damonte, lo que hacía que el Colo tuviera que incursionar en la defensa gracias a su perfil zurdo.
Lo vimos por primera vez en canchas chilenas, un 9 de julio de 2016, ante Universidad de Chile en la pretemporada con miras al Apertura 2016-17, el segundo campeonato que iba a dirigir Sebastián Beccacece tras el paupérrimo Clausura 2015-16, donde ocupó la posición 12 pese a que le habían traído a Gonzalo Jara desde Alemania, a Luciano Fabián Monzón desde Boca Juniors y al conductor Luis Fariña, quien había sido el 10 de Racing de Avellaneda.
Tras el desastre del primer torneo dirigido, el segundo tenía que ser el consagratorio. El presidente Carlos Heller se metió la mano al bolsillo y le trajo al Quili Vilches desde Brasil, a Jean Beausejour directamente desde Colo Colo, a Lorenzo Reyes desde España, Felipe Mora desde Audax, entre otros. Entre esos otros estaba uno de los refuerzos más laureados que arribaron al fútbol chileno en el Siglo XXI. Se trataba del exRiver, Racing y San Lorenzo, Gastón La Gata Fernández. Iba a debutar justamente ante Estudiantes de la Plata, su último club, el club que defendía Leonardo Roque Gil.
La fiesta de ese sábado 9 de julio estaba armada para la U y para Gastón Fernández, quien, en su debut con los azules, compartiría ataque con Felipe Mora. Sería el exaudino quien abriría el marcador recién a los 4 minutos, pero luego lo darían vuelta dos jugadores que hoy actúan en Chile. Juan Ignacio Cavallaro, volante de La Serena, igualaría a los 18’, y luego Leonardo Colo Gil pondría el 2-1 parcial a los 60’, entrando destapado por el segundo palo gracias a su función de lateral izquierdo. El mismo Mora igualaría a los 80 minutos, dejando la sensación que el equipo de Beccacece, aún con tantos nombres nuevos, no había cambiado demasiado.
Así sería. Tras seis fechas el exayudante de Sampaoli sería cambiado por la dupla Castañeda-Musrri, mientras que La Gata jamás cuajaría en los azules y sería enviado a Gremio de Brasil. El que si vería ascensos sería el Colo Gil, quien luego pasaría a Talleres de Córdoba y Rosario Central, dos equipos donde se metió en el corazón de la hinchada y hasta hoy le siguen cada paso que da en Colo Colo. También andaría por Al-Iitihad de Arabia Saudita y el Vasco Da Gama de Brasil. Sampaoli otra vez lo había querido para el Santos, pero la opción nunca se concretó. Está desde 2021 en Colo Colo, y este fin de semana quiere anotarle otra vez a la U, el segundo oficial tras el de la Primera Rueda y otra vez jugando como volante. El puesto en donde también, ahora sí, quiere llegar a la Roja.
