Mario Osbén: A 30 años del Gato campeón como entrenador y jugador

Hace algunos días Diego López, DT de Universidad de Chile, levantó la voz sobre la contratación de un nuevo arquero para su equipo. Entre tantos nombres jóvenes sonando, el técnico uruguayo dejó claro que necesita un arquero de mucha experiencia para que enseñe a los más jóvenes Cristóbal Campos y Pedro Garrido. Con esas características, el nombre que tomó más fuerza fue el de Miguel Jiménez, de 41 años, y actualmente en Rangers de Talca. La idea es que el exU no solo esté listo para jugar en caso que sea necesario, sino que también guíe y presione a los titulares. En el año 1992, por las mismas razones, el Gato Mario Osbén decidió seguir un año más en Cobreloa, con la misma edad de Jiménez y ad portas de cumplir 42 en el mes de julio

Claro, ad portas porque en aquellos años el Torneo iniciaba entre fines de mayo y comienzos de junio, luego de disputar Copa Libertadores y gran parte de la Copa Chile, muchas veces su totalidad. Una idea que muchos piden hoy para los años próximos, y así llegar con más rodaje a la Copa Libertadores. En 1992 el primer partido del Cobreloa de Mario Osbén en el campeonato Nacional fue el 31 de mayo ante Colo Colo. Literalmente el equipo de Mario Osbén, porque ese partido ante los albos tuvo en el banco, de pantalón y abrigo, al Gato, quien aún era jugador activo del club. ¿Cómo había llegado hasta ahí? Estuvo en medio de las negociaciones de los loínos por José Sulantay, quien debía rescindir con Coquimbo Unido antes de sentarse a negociar con los naranjas. El mismo 31 de mayo, el día que Cobreloa jugaba ante Colo Colo con Osbén como DT, el Negro Sulantay firmaba su contrato en un hotel de Santiago.

Sulantay había comenzado ese año 1992 como técnico del sorprendente Coquimbo Unido, quien en 1991 había sido segundo tras Colo Colo, un año después de ascender desde Segunda División. Ese vicecampeonato le sirvió para ir directo a la Copa Libertadores, junto a San Lorenzo, Newell’s Old Boys de Bielsa, Colo Colo de Jozic y la UC de Vicente Cantatore, quien se quedó con la Liguilla de fin de año. Coquimbo terminaría su participación en la Copa el día 3 de abril en Argentina, perdiendo 1-0 ante San Lorenzo, y quedando último del grupo con tres puntos, en una zona donde clasificaban 4 de 5.

Por su parte, Mario Osbén comenzaba el año como uno de los arqueros titulares del Cobreloa de Fernando Cavalleri, equipo que se había reforzado con tres de las figuras del Concepción 1991, como Marcelo Miranda, Carlos Fuentes y Juan Carlos Almada. También había llegado Fernando Cornejo desde O’Higgins, con la condición de no ser lateral derecho. También Jaime Vera, Ramón Peraca Pérez, los defensas Hugo González y Edgardo Fuentes desde México, Pedro Jaque desde Fernández Vial, Norberto Retamar desde O’Higgins, Andrés Roldán desde Osorno, y Leonardo Canales, quien había sido suplente de Marco Cornez en 1991 en Antofagasta. Justamente con Batman era que el Gato Osbén iba a pelear la titularidad en 1992. El Quique Enrique Berríos iba a ser el tercer portero. Los tres quedarían en la historia del club. Luego vendría un cuarto.

Pese al equipazo, y a mostrar buen fútbol en varios pasajes, el equipo se fue eliminado por penales en octavos de final de Copa Chile a manos de Antofagasta, en partidos de ida y vuelta jugados el 10 y 13 de mayo de 1992, a 18 días del inicio del Torneo Nacional. Un fracaso gigante para el equipo que presidía Orlando Álvarez. Además, un escándalo extrafutbolístico de Juan Carlos Almada y Luis Guarda agravaría la situación. El delantero argentino terminaría yéndose a Universidad Católica y Palito sería cesado al término de la Copa Chile. Los ojos apuntaron a José Sulantay, quien ya preparaba a su Coquimbo Unido para el Campeonato Nacional. Esos días, entre Copa Chile y Torneo Nacional, fue un verdadero juego de sillitas calientes en las bancas nacionales. Cavalleri terminaría reemplazando a Manuel Pellegrini en Palestino, quien había renunciado y ficharía en la cuarta fecha en O’Higgins tras la partida de Germán Cornejo. Nelson Acosta, campeón de la Copa, se iría a Cruz Azul, pero volvería para la Liguilla final tras las estadías de Ricardo Contreras, Pedro García y Miguel Ángel Neira en la banca hispana. Una locura.

Finalmente a José Sulantay lo convencieron desde Cobreloa y fue reemplazado por Jorge Luis Siviero en Coquimbo Unido. Eso sí, los tiempos no le dieron al Negro y la dirigencia debió acudir al cuarentón Mario Osbén para que se hiciera cargo interinamente del equipo. El Gato había llegado en 1986 y tenía el título de 1988. Era el líder de un joven equipo, y con muchas ansias de convertirse en entrenador prontamente. El arquero mundialista de 1982 aceptó el desafío y dirigió oficialmente al equipo ante Colo Colo en el Monumental. Su primera experiencia como DT terminaría con derrota 4-2, con show de Claudio Borghi. Dos días después José Sulantay se haría cargo del equipo y el Gato volvería a vestirse de corto para ponerse a disposición del nuevo DT con 41 años, a semanas de los 42.

Ese año Mario Osbén jugaría siete partidos, ante los 23 encuentros de Leonardo Canales. La disputa entre ambos se vio empañada por el accidente de un hijo de Osbén, lo que lo tuvo varias semanas sin entrenar, por lo que se debió recurrir a Carlos Alfredo Vega como cuarto arquero, proveniente de la filial loína en Santiago. No llegó a jugar ningún partido, pero sí es otro de los campeones del 92, quizá el más olvidado. Cuando falleció Mario Osbén, el 7 de febrero de 2021, a los 70 años, el Negro Sulantay recordó aquellos días con el Gato. “Llegué a Santiago, a un hotel donde firmaría mi contrato,  almorcé con los dirigentes y ese día Cobreloa jugaba con Colo Colo en el Monumental, precisamente dirigido interinamente por Mario, y perdimos 4-2. Luego, comenzamos a trabajar juntos, yo no tenía preparador de arqueros, y me tocó entrenarlo a él y a Leonardo Canales, que  posteriormente se quedó con el puesto de titular. Creo que entre él y el “Cóndor” Rojas están los dos mejores arqueros que ha tenido Chile”, subrayó Sulantay en aquel momento.

De más está recordar que ese equipazo de Cobreloa de 1992 fue campeón de la mano de José Sulantay dirigiendo las 29 fechas restantes, con Fernando Cornejo de lateral derecho, y quitándole al Colo Colo de Jozic la posibilidad del tetracampeonato. Fueron seis meses donde compartieron dos de los más grandes del fútbol chileno, el Negro y el Gato. Con poquita diferencia de edad, lograron una relación de respeto y ayuda mutua en aquella campaña. “Era muy alegre y tranquilo, muy común y corriente siendo un crack y exseleccionado nacional. Incluso, tomó muy bien el haber perdido la titularidad en Cobreloa, porque él estuvo alejado un tiempo de los entrenamientos debido al accidente de un hijo. Fue en el año en que salimos campeones, y Mario me apoyó siempre estando en la banca, donde ya se perfilaban sus cualidades como entrenador. Era una excelente persona y un jugador buenísimo, sobresaliente”, aseguraba Sulantay en 2021.

Ya en 1993, con el título como entrenador y jugador de 1992, Mario Osbén partiría desde uno de los tantos equipos donde fue ídolo, no sin antes aceptar ser inscrito como el tercer portero en la lista de buena fe de Copa Libertadores 1993 con el número 25. Tras un año retirado, en 1994 llegó al recién creado equipo de la Universidad de Concepción para hacer su último año como jugador profesional a los 44 años. Rápidamente se convertiría en entrenador del Campanil, tomando entre otras cosas lo aprendido con Sulantay, el DT chileno más innovador de aquellos años.

El Gato no hizo oficialmente dupla técnica con Sulantay, pero se puede decir que como DT en la fecha 1, como ayudante técnico cuando fue suplente, y también como preparador de arqueros de Canales, Berríos y Vega en el día a día, fue oficialmente campeón como DT del Cobreloa 92. También lo hizo como jugador, con siete partidos de titular. ¿Lo tenían? Son esas cositas que tienen los grandes.
