Han pasado algunos días desde que Lucas Barrios anunció su retiro del fútbol. El cierre del mercado de pases de mitad de año hizo que el argentino-paraguayo tomara la decisión de abandonar la actividad después de 19 años como profesional tras su debut en Argentinos Juniors en 2003 de la mano del Tigre Ricardo Gareca. Justamente Tigre sería su próximo equipo antes de volver al Argentinos Juniors del Osvaldo Sosa. En 2005 Chile se le cruzaría en su camino. Deportes Temuco, de Claudio Nigretti en el Apertura, y Osvaldo Villegas en el Clausura, sería su casa. Doce goles en 28 partidos no dejaron indiferente a nadie. Su estadía en el Sur no iba a durar más de ese año, sobre todo con el equipo yéndose a Primera B. Tiro Federal de Óscar del Solar le iba a abrir las puertas de la Primera División de Argentina en el primer semestre del 2006, en el Clausura 2005-06. Solo un gol en doce partidos.
Tras Temuco y Del Solar, otra vez Chile iba a estar en su horizonte. Cobreloa lo requeriría en el Clausura 2006 y el Apertura 2007 para formar delantera con Esteban Paredes, Rodrigo Mannara entre otros. La Pantera, de una potencia fuera de lo común, destacaba fácil en el fútbol chileno. En su adolescencia casi debió dejar el fútbol por su falta de contextura física. Pocos años después ya parecía un adelantado al lado de muchos otros atacantes de la liga local. De Cobreloa se fue con 22 goles en 35 partidos. El fútbol mexicano ponía sus dólares para llevarse a uno de los mejores delanteros en la Liga local. El Atlas de Guadalajara sería su club en el Apertura 2007-08.
Tal como su regreso consolidado a Argentina para jugar en Tiro Federal, su semestre en la primera división mexicana también fue malo, con solo un gol en 14 partidos. Parecía que solo Chile le sentaba bien. El Colo Colo tetracampeón iría por él en el Apertura 2008, aún con Claudio Borghi en la banca. En tres torneos se cansó de hacer goles, dándole el título de Clausura 2008 al DT Marcelo Barticiotto. En realidad fueron cuatro torneos jugados, pero en el Clausura 2009 solo alcanzó a actuar dos partidos antes de partir al Borussia Dortmund de Alemania en 6,5 millones de dólares. Igual alcanzó a hacer un gol en ese certamen, siendo oficialmente campeón con el equipo de Hugo Tocalli.
En Alemania lo tuvo Jurgen Klopp y lo convirtió en su regalón. En la Bundesliga 2009-2010 hizo 19 goles en 33 partidos y puso a Alemania a hablar de él. Semanas antes de Sudáfrica 2010 se nacionalizó paraguayo y jugó el Mundial de titular sin conocer a sus compañeros. En el mercado europeo de 2010 tuvo ofertas, pero su estadía en Dortmund era de ensueño. Fue con el libro de pases cerrado que varias ofertas le movieron la estantería. A poco iniciar la Liga 2010-2011 el argentino Gonzalo Higuaín se lesionó en el Real Madrid. El equipo de José Mourinho pensó en Edin Dzeko, Hugo Almeida y Lucas Barrios para reemplazarlo apenas abriera el libro de pases en enero. Los contactos más fuertes fueron con Barrios, quien en el segundo semestre del 2010 ya llevaba 9 goles. Los hispanos ofrecieron 20 millones de euros por quien hace poco jugaba en el aún no remodelado Germán Becker de Temuco.
Barrios estaba entregado al destino. Soñaba con jugar en España o Italia, pero estaba cómodo en Dortmund. Fue Jurgen Klopp quien lo convenció de quedarse en Alemania, e incluso personalmente apuró los trámites de renovación. En ese mercado invernal europeo Barrios siguió en la Bundesliga, pero ya en febrero, con el libro de pases cerrado, otra vez el Real Madrid iría tras él para asegurarlo para la 2011-2012. Ahí fue cuando se concretó su renovación con los amarillos hasta que Barrios tuviera 32 años. Era un “quédate con quien te quiera como Jurgen Klopp quería a Lucas Barrios”. En la Bundesliga 2010 – 2011 terminaría con 16 goles en 32 partidos y con el equipo consagrándose campeón. Lucas Barrios era uno de los mejores delanteros del mundo. Y eso que compartía equipo con Robert Lewandowski.
Con ese estatus llegó a la Copa América Argentina 2011, donde una lesión lo alejó definitivamente de una venta al Real Madrid con los merengues pagando una nueva cláusula de contrato. También se alejó de la primera línea del Borussia Dortmund. En la 2011-2012, después de salir de su lesión, “solo” anotó 8 goles en 14 partidos en la exigente Bundesliga. Otra vez fue campeón, pero ahora desde un rol no tan estelar. Era el momento de salir. Terminaría eligiendo los millones por sobre lo deportivo y se iría a China por 10 millones de dólares. Se le perdió un poco la pista en Asia, luego en el Spartak Moscú, pero en Francia retomaría a su nivel europeo jugando para el Montpellier.
En Francia acabaría su experiencia en Europa antes de volver a Sudamérica para jugar en Brasil, Argentina y Chile. Cuando lo quiso Real Madrid, también lo miró el Milan, Liverpool y Manchester City. Prefirió quedarse en Alemania y ganarle el título al Bayern Munich, y luego en Francia, y ser protagonista por sobre el PSG, el Mónaco y los Olympique. Era hijo del rigor. “Yo dormía en una pieza chiquitita en Temuco y cuando llovía caían gotas y yo me tenía que mover, incluso la cama también para no mojarme. Esas cosas te hacen decir que hay que luchar, porque las cosas pueden cambiar, no solamente económico, sino que en lo futbolístico. Los sueños están para cumplirse”, comentaba hace unos años.
