Era el 8 de abril de 1999. Estadio Nacional de Lima. El escenario hipotético que tanto se había repetido durante más de un año se estaba produciendo. Cuando iban solo 30 segundos del duelo entre Universidad Católica y Universitario de Lima por la Copa Libertadores, el defensor chileno Miguel Ramírez saltó para luchar una pelota aérea con Eduardo Esidio, delantero brasileño del equipo crema. El codo del Cheíto rozó la cabeza del 11 limeño, lo que le provocó un corte y un posterior sangramiento. Todo normal en el fútbol, salvo porque el atacante de la U de Lima era el primer futbolista profesional diagnosticado como portador del VIH Sida.
Tras algunos minutos sangrando en cancha, pero sin participar en el juego, uno de los goleadores históricos del fútbol peruano debió salir para ser atendido. Cerca de los 5 minutos de partido volvió a ingresar con un parche con manchas de sangre en su cabeza, el que era cubierto con una malla. El delantero cruzado Hugo Brizuela se volvió loco al ver la escena. Corrió desaforado donde el árbitro John Toro de Colombia para impedir el ingreso de Esidio. Sería Rodrigo Ríos primero y Marco Antonio Figueroa después, quienes lo calmarían. El brasileño tenía el visto bueno del cuerpo médico peruano para volver a entrar. Eso era suficiente para que el réferi le diera el permiso de ingreso.
En Chile algunos canales se habían negado en 1997 a televisar una campaña del SIDA. Para muchos era un tema tabú, sobre todo en época de casi nulo internet. Había más ignorancia que hoy sobre el tema, y eso es mucho decir. La transmisión para nuestro país fue a través de las pantallas de TVN, y estaba comandada por Juan Ramón Cid en el relato y Patricio Yáñez en los comentarios. En Lima, Karim Nur narraba los pormenores al borde de la cancha. Desde ahí ponía paños fríos a la situación. Los protocolos ante cualquier imprevisto con Esidio se habían hecho con anticipación. El delantero había vuelto a ser tenido en cuenta en Universitario luego de la presión del medio. Claro, cuando supo el 14 de enero de 1998 que tenía SIDA fue despedido del club en el que había fichado días antes como revelación en el modesto Deportiva Alcides Vigo, su primer equipo en Perú, al que había llegado solo seis meses antes. A la prensa se le ocultaría la información y se diría que tenía problemas familiares. Él volvería a Brasil con la noticia de ser seropositivo. Pensaba no contarle a nadie. Quería que el avión que lo llevaba de Perú a Sao Paulo se cayera y terminar de una vez con el sufrimiento.
Poco después la noticia se filtró. Eran pocos lo que sabían. El presidente, el médico, el entrenador Osvaldo Piazza. La teoría es que, en época de elecciones, un candidato opositor lo informó a los medios peruanos, medios que no tuvieron piedad. Antes de saber cómo estaba, ellos querían saber cómo se había contagiado, si era homosexual. El delantero estaba en una relación amorosa con una mujer peruana.
Si de algo sirvió la filtración fue para presionar su regreso a Universitario. Organizaciones Pro Sida y la FIFA obligaron a la U de Lima a revertir su decisión. Su condición no le prohibía ser un deportista de alto rendimiento. Él quería seguir adelante. Si bien rezó para que ese avión se cayera, jamás pensó en el suicidio. Se sanó del alma al lado de su familia y volvió a Perú para reincorporarse al equipo crema ya avanzado el 98 y sin pretemporada. Ese sería un buen año con 13 goles y el título de campeón. En 99, año en que haría 16 conquistas, jugaría la Copa Libertadores ante Colo Colo de Nelsinho y la Católica de Carvallo.
Antes del choque con Miguel Ramíre, por el que debió salir en el entretiempo, mucho se había hablado de una jugada como esa antes de su reintegro a la U. Incluso el DT de la selección peruana Juan Carlos Oblitas le había hecho la cruz. “Si yo soy defensor y tengo que saltar a cabecear con Esidio, no lo hago”, dijo en los medios. Su DT en Universitario, Osvaldo Piazza, le prestaría ropa, en un discurso también educativo. “Es una barbaridad decir que uno no va a saltar a cabecear con Esidio. No es momento de pensar en eso. Ahora hay que estar con el ser humano. Hay que ayudarlo. Si a él le hace bien entrenarse, que venga y se entrene con nosotros. Más adelante, si se pone en estado físico, veremos qué pasa. Hay que hacerle estudios médicos y no improvisar. En esto es importante estar bien informado, porque es un caso delicado. Salir a decir cualquier cosa por los medios es una barbaridad”.
Efectivamente se puso a punto y anotó goles de todos los colores en la U de Lima. Durante muchos años fue el jugador con más goles en una temporada, convirtiendo 37 en el año 2000, siendo solo superado por Mario Jardel del Galatasaray a nivel mundial, Hace poco, a nivel peruano lo superaría el exConcepción y Unión Española Emannuel Herrera, quien gritó 39 veces en el 2018.
.Tras ese gran año 2000, en el 2001 pasaría al Alianza Lima, en una de las “grandes traiciones” de la historia del fútbol peruano. Ahí también fue campeón y goleador, dejando un grato recuerdo en solo un año. En 2021, y luego del descenso con Mario Salas en la banca, que luego sería revocado, el brasileño se ofrecería para jugar con el club en Segunda División. Tenía 50 años y 20 de retirado, pese a haber jugado algunos partidos con União Barbarense de Brasil en el 2006. Finalmente Alianza Lima se quedaría por secretaría en Primera División y el ofrecimiento de Esidio no sería necesario analizarlo.
Hoy sigue conviviendo con SIDA. Vive en Sao Paulo y forma niños para que cumplan su sueño en el fútbol. Constantemente opina de la actualidad del fútbol peruano. De la selección, de Universitario y de Alianza Lima. Además de discriminación. Le tocó ser primer jugador profesional diagnosticado con SIDA en la historia del fútbol. Le tocó enfrentar a la UC y Colo Colo en la Libertadores 1999 en el peak de su irrupción mediática. Ambos clubes chilenos se fueron eliminados en octavos de final, pero en esa Copa no estuvimos tan mal como país. Salvo ese temor del paraguayo Hugo Brizuela, fue un rival más durante cuatro partidos.
