“¿Amistosos? Amistosos eran los de antes, los que cubría yo en los 90, ahí sí que pasaban cosas”, decía un periodista deportivo noventero. “El 93 se hizo una Copa de Verano y vino el Sao Paulo de Telé Santana, que le había ganado la Libertadores al Newell’s de Bielsa”.
Se refería a la Copa Ciudad de Santiago, que además de Sao Paulo, tuvo a Católica, la U y Dinamo de Moscú en partidos en el Estadio Nacional y en San Carlos de Apoquindo. Por Sao Paulo vino Vitor (que luego pasó al Real Madrid), Valber (ídolo del papá de Valber Huerta), Ronaldao, Toninho Cerezo, Raí, Cafú (cuando era delantero), Palinha y Elivelton. La final de esa copa amistosa la jugaron ante Universidad Católica.
Meses después, exactamente el 26 de mayo, esos jugadores, más Zetti, Müller y Caté, se colgaban una nueva medalla de campeones de América derrotando a la misma Católica. En las fotos, atrás de Zetti, Raí, Cafú y Palinha celebrando con la Copa y la medalla oro en el Estadio Nacional, están los jugadores de la UC, protagonistas de una tremenda Libertadores, pero lejanos a una hazaña que necesitaba de 4 goles en el partido de vuelta, tras el 5-1 en el Morumbí.
Tupper, Lepe, Romero, Jorge y Rodrigo Gómez se unían al portero Óscar Wirth, elegido el mejor meta de esa Copa Libertadores 1993, en una noche triste y helada en el Nacional. El arquero de casi 38 años (5 de noviembre de 1955) había tenido su última oportunidad de retirarse con un gran título, ese que le fue esquivo dos veces a comienzos de la década anterior cuando defendía a Cobreloa (1981 ante Flamengo y 1982 contra Peñarol).
Óscar Wirth, el Chino, fue el meta titular de la Copa del 93. Tras sus pasos por la UC, Cobreloa, Colo Colo y la U, había vuelto a ponerse la franja, pero para ser el suplente de Pato Toledo, el mejor arquero de Euro-América en 1991.
Como Wirth, muchos habían llegado para ser alternativa de Toledo y Marco Cornez. Por ahí pasaron Marcelo León, Fernando Díaz, Guillermo Velasco (titular del Mundial Juvenil de 1987), el paraguayo Julián Coronel, Leonardo Canales, unos años antes, y Nelson Tapia, después.
Todos habían llegado con la ilusión de consagrarse en la UC, pero siempre estaba Cornez y Toledo. A Wirth, a pesar de su gran currículum, también le tocó esperar. Llegó en 1992 y jugó solo dos partidos, mientras que el Pato había actuado en 35 oportunidades y esperaba que la Copa del 1993 lo catapultara al extranjero tras un fallido paso al Zaragoza, equipo que finalmente prefirió a José Luis Chilavert.
Por fin con la UC
Toledo no faltaba nunca, ni en Copa Chile, y Óscar Wirth, primer jugador en actuar en los cuatro equipos grandes del fútbol chileno, comenzaba a pensar en el retiro. Estaba cerca de los 40 años, no jugaba y su último paso “exitoso” había sido en La Serena en 1989, donde jugó 30 partidos. Luego, en 1991, había actuado en 12 partidos por Deportes Concepción, como alternativa de Nicolás Villamil y compartiendo suplencia con Walter Cordero. En Católica lo habían reclutado por su trayectoria y porque era un jugador símbolo del club. Pese a ser formado en Unión Española, había tenido su debut profesional en los cruzados.
Wirth había aceptado ser suplente del Pato Toledo, pero a comienzos del 93 la duda creció, más aún cuando Nacho Prieto decidió contratar a uno de los mejores arqueros de la temporada 92: Nelson Tapia. El Simpson venía de O’Higgins y era una apuesta para la UC; llegaba para luchar la suplencia con Wirth, pero tenía mejores armas: juventud, y un campeonato completo como titular en la temporada anterior.
Wirth sabía que se venía difícil su estadía en la UC, pero no aflojó. Habían pasado más de diez años desde que fue pilar en los dos subcampeonatos de Cobreloa en la Libertadores y quería estar, al menos, en el plantel de una UC que podía pelear grandes cosas en esa Copa.
Porque, a simple vista, la cosa pintaba bien. Se habían reforzado con Sergio Vázquez, titular de la selección argentina, Ricardo Lunari de Newell´s, Gerardo Reinoso y Luka Tudor. Además, Juan Carlos Almada, José Cardozo y Rodrigo Barrera estaban en un gran nivel, mientras que Andrés Romero, Daniel López, Leonel Contreras, Mario Lepe, Nelson Parraguez y Raimundo Tupper eran de los mejores jugadores del torneo local. También tenían un amuleto: había vuelto Luis Pérez, uno que algo sabía de ganar la Copa Libertadores. Todos ellos liderados por el mejor arquero de América: Patricio Toledo. Aunque fuera desde afuera, Óscar Wirth quería estar en ese plantel.
El 15 de febrero de 1993, con 8.842 personas en las tribunas, Católica enfrentó a Sao Paulo por la final de la Copa Ciudad de Santiago. Tres días antes, los brasileños habían vencido 2-0 a la U de Arturo Salah con goles de Raí. Ese mismo día, pero en San Carlos de Apoquindo, los cruzados derrotaron por penales al Dinamo de Moscú tras empatar 1-1 en los 90 minutos. La tanda desde los doce pasos fue perfecta y ambos equipos convirtieron sus cinco lanzamientos. Eso, hasta que llegó el sexto para los rusos y Patricio Toledo estuvo notable para contener lanzándose a la derecha. El Pato, otra vez figura, llevaba su equipo a la final.
Ya en el partido decisivo de la Copa Ciudad de Santiago ante los paulistas, Toledo nuevamente lideraba a la UC en una fresca tarde-noche de verano. En la banca, esperando como testigo privilegiado, estaba Óscar Wirth.
El arquero sabía lo que era esperar. En los 80 había llegado al Real Valladolid de Xavier Azkargorta. Aguantó 30 fechas como suplente de Fenoy, hasta que el 12 de abril de 1987 le tocó debutar de visita ante el Sevilla. Pero no hizo su estreno como arquero, sino que como marcador central tras las ausencias de los zagueros Manolo Hierro y Enrique Moreno. Al haber tres arqueros en el plantel, frecuentemente Wirth entrenaba como jugador de campo, y ahí fue mostrando sus cualidades de líbero. En el duelo ante los sevillanos fue una de las figuras y el Diario El País lo describió como una grata revelación. “Wirth brilló como central; organizó la línea defensiva, situada en zona. No permitió que marcasen ni Ramón ni Cholo, últimamente muy acertados de cara al gol. (Wirth) se permitió el alarde de retirar en el área del Sevilla los dos saques de esquina lanzados por el Valladolid”, decía la crónica sobre el 2-1 del equipo del chileno. Tras eso, el meta cuidó 10 veces el arco de Valladolid antes de pasar por el fútbol colombiano, La Serena, Concepción y otra vez Católica.
Desde la banca a la medalla
Diez minutos habían pasado desde que Raí y Lepe se saludaron en el centro del campo, cuando Toledo salió a cortar un intrascendente centro sobre su área. Cayó fuerte al piso y un “crac” sonó en la cabeza de Toledo y en la de los casi 9 mil espectadores. En el banco, Óscar Wirth, con 20 años de profesionalismo en el cuerpo, supo de inmediato que era una fractura de esas que te dejan varios meses fuera de la canchas. Finalmente, le tocaba ser el titular.
El resultado de ese duelo fue 3-0 para los paulistas con goles de Ronaldo (luego Ronaldao tras la asunción de Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima al primer plano del fútbol mundial), Palinha y Claudio.
Nueve días después de la lesión y fractura de Toledo, el Chino Wirth debutaba ante Cobreloa en Calama por la Copa Libertadores del 93. En la banca estaba Nelson Tapia, pero el veterano arquero sabía que esos roles podían cambiar al menor error. Sin embargo, el hombre ya sabía manejar la presión; Wirth se quedó con el arco y fue vital para conseguir el primer lugar del grupo que, además, compartían con Bolívar y San José de Oruro. A sus casi 38 años, la altura no le afectaba y tomó un segundo aire, literalmente, en los miles de metros de Calama, La Paz y Oruro.
En octavos de final le tocó la primera salida a Colombia, país en el que había jugado en 1988 por Independiente de Medellín. Esta vez iba a tierras cafeteras para jugar ante Atlético Nacional. El 1-2 allá, sumado al 2-0 en casa, pusieron a la UC en cuartos de final. Wirth tenía, por fin, sus meses de gloria en la UC, equipo del que se había ido mal en 1979, con el que había vivido el descenso en 1973 y el ascenso en 1975. Cruzado de tomo y lomo, disfrutaba lo mismo que Sebastián Rozental, su compañero de solo 16 años.
Tras Atlético Nacional, vendría el Barcelona de Guayaquil. Fue 3-1 en la ida, zapatazo de Charly Vázquez al ángulo incluido, y 1-0 en la vuelta, con golazo de zurda del Moto Romero. Un equipo nacional, dos años después de la hazaña de Colo Colo en 1991, volvía a meterse entre los cuatro mejores de América, junto a Sao Paulo, Cerro Porteño y América de Cali. Ese último sería el rival de los cruzados en semifinales, la llave del partido inolvidable de Óscar Wirth.
La llave ante América
El 5 de mayo de 1993 tuvo lugar el partido de ida de la semifinal. Por norma Conmebol, Católica había debido abandonar San Carlos de Apoquindo, para jugar ante América de Cali en el Estadio Nacional. En medio de la niebla y la lluvia torrencial, un centro de Romero llegó hasta el área colombiana en una jugada muy parecida a la de la lesión de Patricio Toledo. Esta vez fue Julio Gómez, reemplazante de Ángel Comizzo, el que no pudo despejar y le dejó servida la pelota a Lunari, quien no tuvo problemas para mandarla al fondo del arco norte. Comenzaba la venganza ante el mismo equipo que había eliminado a los cruzados un año antes en octavos de final, con el mismo Ignacio Prieto como DT, y con Chemo del Solar y Coke Contreras en el plantel. 1-0 definitivo y a esperar el partido de vuelta.
El 12 de mayo de 1993 se vendría la revancha en una Colombia convulsionada aún por el triste legado de Pablo Escobar. Treinta y cinco mil colombianos repletaban en el Pascual Guerrero. Era el infierno de Cali. A los 12 minutos, una escapada de Anthony de Ávila terminó con foul de Romero que el árbitro uruguayo Ernesto Filippi no dudó en cobrar. La tranquilidad de la UC dependía del experimentado Óscar Wirth, a exactos doce pasos del paraguayo Javier Ferreira. El guaraní tomó carrera, disparó de zurda al centro del arco y mandó para la derecha a Óscar Wirth. Los penales no parecían ser lo suyo; las cosas quedaban igualadas.
Menos de dos minutos más tarde, un enredo entre Daniel López y Sergio Vázquez, dejó solo a Wirth defendiendo la portería ante el Pitufo De Ávila. El Chino pudo en primera instancia, pero no en segunda, y a los 15 minutos los colombianos ya estaban 2-0.
América no pudo defender la ventaja y a los 31 minutos Juan Carlos Almada definió elegantemente con un sombrero a tres dedos por sobre el arquero Gómez. El partido comenzó a ser de ida y vuelta. Católica tuvo posibilidades inmejorables con Tupper y López. América, por su parte, atacaba con Lozano, Polillita Da Silva y compañía. Eso, hasta que a los 87 minutos Gerardo Reinoso se escapó por el medio, cedió hacia su derecha y Lunari entrando desde atrás anotó el 2-2. A ochenta metros lo miraba Óscar Wirth, cauto. Quedaban tres minutos y el duelo no estaba terminado.
A los 90 minutos, en un ataque liderado por el paraguayo José Saturnino Cardozo, le quedó el balón a Gerardo Reinoso, quien fue a trancar muy cerca del área de América. El defensor colombiano sacó el pie y la Vieja envió el balón hacia atrás. Ahí la recogió Orlando Maturana y encaró hacia la portería del meta chileno. Antes de llegar a las barbas de Wirth, Maturana enganchó hacia adentro y Lepe lo derribó. Penal para los colombianos.
Minuto 47 del segundo tiempo y el árbitro Filippi dio la orden. En el borde del área, Reinoso se lamentaba por el innecesario trancazo hacia atrás. En la banca, el ya recuperado, pero ahora suplente, Patricio Toledo, recordaba el penal atajado ante Dinamo Moscú que le dio el paso a la UC a la final de la Ciudad de Santiago ante Sao Paulo.
Alexander Escobar tomó corta carrera; otra vez un zurdo enfrentaba al cuidavallas cruzado. Lanzó a su derecha, la izquierda de Wirth. Para allá voló Óscar, al mismo rincón al que no fue en el penal del primer tiempo. Sus guantes, casi colgados hacía menos de cuatro meses, tocaron el balón. El meta pasaba a la historia cruzada por un penal atajado en los descuentos.
Al partido no le quedaba nada, como a la propia carrera de Wirth. La UC se instalaba en la final de la Libertadores por primera y única vez en su historia. Sería ante Sao Paulo, como en la Copa Ciudad de Santiago. Óscar Wirth jugaría su tercera final del torneo continental, una inesperada nueva oportunidad que le dio la vida.
Pero la tercera tampoco fue la vencida. El rival era el Sao Paulo de Telé Santana, uno de los equipos más recordados en la historia del fútbol brasileño. El único, junto al Santos de Pelé, en ser campeón de la Libertadores dos veces consecutivas. El cuadro de Raí, Palinha y Müller.
Tras la Copa todo volvió a la normalidad. Patricio Toledo fue el titular, subió al primer equipo la promesa Alex Varas y Nelson Tapia volvió tras su préstamo en Temuco.
Óscar Wirth partió a Alianza de Lima, en silencio. Allá fue figura en un equipo que vivía un enorme desorden administrativo y dirigencial. Eso no era lo suyo y decidió, ahora sí, colgar los guantes. Se retiró en silencio, como el que sintió en la final de la Copa Ciudad de Santiago cuando se lesionó Toledo y se escuchó ese “crac” en todo el estadio. Como el del Pascual Guerrero de Cali cuando le atajó el penal a Alexander Escobar en los descuentos del segundo tiempo.
Ese febrero a mayo del 93 se empezaron a jugar los descuentos de la carrera del Chino. La carrera que se negaba a dejar porque sentía que le faltaba algo. No fue un título, pero sí el reconocimiento de una hinchada que le perdonó tres traiciones. Todo gracias a aceptar ser suplente en el equipo de sus amores, en donde el Pato Toledo no lo dejaba jugar ni en los amistosos. “¿Amistosos? Amistosos eran los de antes, ahí sí que pasaban cosas”.
